The nose is very vegetal, more on vegetables, artichokes, olives with floral notes. On the palate, it is especially the menhtol and the medicinal herbs to see notes of pharmacological products. The final is not very long but interesting.

Yikes, this is LADEN with esters. So much so, that it would need to be diluted 1 drop this to 15 drops of vodka. And it would still stink. Reek. It is a bomb. Not for ordinary consumption.

It is completely different than everything else, and very fun to try. It starts with notes of acid banana candy and red berry, and then quickly move to more medicinal notes and even a smoked taste. I found the batch 3 less on the red-berry notes and smokier. I'm still not sure how we're supposed to use it though.

I think this rum would be a perfect drink for Harley Quinn, this is crazy stuff.
I was looking forward to taste this high ester rum. Especially because I knew there are ice candies and strawbeeries flavors. And it's true, there are all of these things.

The nose is quite smooth. Of course it's a young rum, it will not hide this fact from you. Flavors are balanced and unique.
The taste is extreme, with so much sweetness and ice candies, an aged rum of this kind must be exceptional. If you are new to rum, stay away from this one. It will puch you in the face and you will never recover.

It reminds me a little bit of Revolte rum. Because of the lime and steel flavors.
Why do I give a 6 rating. The intensity is extreme but there are many flavors out of balance. It needs some aging. It's not an easy going rum, you can use it for flavoring other rums. But drinking it neat is not an easy walk.
I will do some experiments and blend this with other rums. This stuff is amazing for blends, it's very dominant but I love the strawbeeries if you blend it.

Smell: ice candy, herbs, strawberries, lime, stainles steel, dust
Taste: ice candies, lime, herbs, steel
Middle: extreamly sweet like warm 7up, dust/hay, pine needles, rosemary, strawberries
Finish: moldy strawberries, holy Moly this is a long finish, herbs (pine needles/rosemary) and dust/hay
The aftertaste is still 1h later in your mouth. It feels like you brushed your teeths, I'm prety sure that 90% of bacterias died.

Sweetness: 4.5/5
Fruits: 2/5
Spice: 4/5
Mildness: 0/5
Intensity: 5/5
Complexity: 3/5
Value (35€): 2.5/5
Experience level: expert

Experiment 1: 2cl Bacardi Reserva Limitada 12y with 0.5cl Savanna Herr. Smooth nose, ice candy, strawbeery chewing gum, smooth but Bacardi got killed.
Initial taste is dominated by strawbeeries, then ice candies, some vegetables (tomatoes), spice with some wood in the aftertaste. The finish is long. Not bad and smooth overall.

Experiment 2: Mixed Kill Devil Hampden 10 C<>H with Savanna HERR 1:1. Holy this is spicy stuff. Nose: citrus, some pineapple and strawberries, but they are very weak, they neutralized each other. Initial taste is very mild with pineapple, but then very spicy in the middle and there is a spicy, sour note like bulky acid, as if you had vomited.

Experiment 3: Appleton Estate 12 with Savanna HERR 4:1. Dry fruits, some strawbeeries, plants with wood and earth in the nose. Smooth aromatic taste with floral notes, some strawberries with dry fruits.

Experiment 4: mixed with MG XO triple cask.
Wood, orange, some floral notes (roses), strawberries, menthol in the nose.
Orange, wood, menthol, berries, wood.
Very good mix 9/10.

Savanna HERR 57

Now here's a super interesting rum. Savanna distillery in Réunion takes a molasses base, does a long 11 day fermentation (HERR = High Ester Rum Réunion), distills with a pot still to make this very unique white rum, bottled at 57%ABV.

On the nose you get guava, tropical fruit juice (like the kind from the tiny box as a kid), pineapple juice, incredible fruitiness, sour cherry blasters, cotton candy, watermelon candy.

The palate is intense tropical juice, pineapple, fruity gum, and gummy bears.

The finish is mint, cream, and heaps of tropical fruit.

What an interesting and intensely satisfying rum - this is so easy going like a rum that is the essence of tropical juice, but not the artificially sweetened variety - this is a proper unadulterated rum. I would definitely recommended to try this - I'd love a bottle of this in my collection to show people another totally different direction rum can go.

A unbelievable fruity smell, a lot of ester, fruit gums, alcohol. The taste is also very fruity, light sweet and a light alcoholic burn. Something very special...

It's a bit like Residents music in rum form, you may not like it, but you have to try it.

A unique and divisive rum, with a tremendous smell of fresh-from-the-can green olives that jumps at you from the bottleneck, then in the glass some kind of highly chemical raspberry bubblegum or arlequin-sweet ("Harley Quinn drink" said Mr. Vomi, who just nailed it).

Lontan 57 is also amazing - less monolithic, more complex maybe - but this might be the most excentric rum of all Savanna - which says a lot. Can be "drowned" in gallons of fruit juice, ginger beer, whatever, and will change a simple plain rum into something else completely.

Spent ten years in an inox tank (they maybe thought they could never sell this stuff even in blends ?), so it is technically a 10 years old rum (and if you can't find it anymore you can also try the one bottled by Velier, at 62+ %, it's the bigger twin) !

Incredible 14 years forgotten in steel tank. Batch No.4, distilled in 2006, bottled in 2020 with an ester content of 423.4 gr/hlpa.
Crystal clear in the glass.
On the nose all your desires are realized, think of something and smell it - you will find it. Dominant are the bazooka gum scents that will never, ever make you guess a rum in a blind tasting. Resins, fruits, spices, sugar cane, flowers and more are all in a crazy jumble to be discovered.
On the palate, the 57% alcohol by volume is actually quite bearable and yet the flavors really burn into your tongue and won't let you go. Pink berries and again that bubblegum that dominates everything and pushes fruit and spice to the sidelines.
On the finish, the burnt-in flavors linger until dawn.
The crazy brother of the Velier HERR bottling of 2018. A bit more intense on the nose than the Velier, but the 2018 is more balanced and elegant in profile. Therefore only 8+
For rum extremists, maniacs, seekers and all who are up for an adventure.
