Recently I have been on an unaged Agricole streak. I think it has something to do with the summer heat and Ti Punch being like refreshing lemonade but for the past month or so I have mostly had an eye for unaged Agricole and Clairin. This Rhum has been recommended to me over and over again, so when my favorite rum spot got it’s new order in I immediately grabbed a bottle. I have been told that this makes an incredible Ti Punch up there to rival Neisson Blanc.
So, as I do with all my rum finds I tried this straight and in the cocktail I got it for (Ti Punch) to see if this lives up to all the hype I hear about it.
This is an unaged Rhum made in the Agricole style from fresh pressed sugar cane juice on the island of Marie Galante, distilled on a column still, and then bottled at 59% ABV.
Wafting it from the Glencairn I get a very heavy note like a strong dirty Vodka Martini. Digging deeper I get Green Olives in Brine and a heavy musty, Moldy Hay note like smelling a hay bale that has been left out for a month through several rain storms. After that I get the smell of Salt Water followed by an umami note that closely approximates grilled chicken breast with no spices. This is a different from other Agricoles in that it doesn’t smell as fresh. It smells more salty and moldy hay with a touch of umami.
Taking a sip I get an immediate flash of Fresh Grass like literally chewing a full grown grass stem. But the flash disappears and turns straight into Briny Salt Water. Salt Water lingers a good while and as it fades I get a slightly bitter Dandelion Greens note and metallic note.
After the rum leaves my mouth I get a heavy Chlorine note like pool water followed by the bitter Dandelion Green herbal note.
I have to be honest, while some, many even, may love this and find it interesting…I just don’t. It’s way to salty and the finish is metallic chemical and bitter. While the fresh grass flash is ok, it dissipates quickly and is replaced by a brininess that I just don’t enjoy. It really is like alcoholic sea water to my tastes. I am fairly disappointed.
So despite that, how does it hold up in the Ti Punch? Unfortunately, similarly to my tastes. The brininess even overpowers the sugar and the lime to a point that is just not very refreshing to me.
I had a hard time believing it so I came back to it several more time. Alas the experience remains the same each time. I just don’t like this one (but that doesn’t mean that others can’t). I do realize I am probably in the minority of rum aficionados on this one.
For a while I wondered what I was going to do with a liter of high powered rum that I didn’t especially like. Fortunately, a French friend of mine agreed to make an Arrangé for me in exchange for the rest of the bottle. Deal.

Very aromatic and fragrant. It has a very pungent and savory aroma, alongside the typical agricole grass notes - bit of a love-it-or-hate-it situation. It's also incredibly (and dangerously) smooth, I wouldn't have guessed its 59% ABV at all if I was blind-tasting it; barely any alcoholic burn at all.
I got great results pairing it with soused herring, try it if you're into cold fish!
One thing I don't like: I get the impression that the bottle loses flavor really fast after unsealing - at first it was welcome, since the freshly-opened flavor had an overwhelming in-your-face pungency that was a bit too much for me, but now after about a month it starts tasting a little flat (note that it's summer here, my kitchen isn't climatized and the bottle is on a shelf; would probably be different in winter. Hasn't impacted any of my other spirits as far as I can tell, though). I assume that it's because the aroma compounds are very volatile, nothing to do with how the screw top was made.
Very tasty, fruity rum. Does not feel like 59%. Great as Ti-Punch!

It's great but one thing I immediately find is strong minerally flavor, like in tap water. But overall I still get excellent and deep flavor. It's delicious and almost a 9 for me, it's just I get almost something even chlorine like (probably me). There's many layers, floral, herby, fruits, just major flavor all around

Bottle gifted to me by friend Patrik. Clear. Aroma of freshly baked muffins right out of the oven. Hot and thick mouthfeel. This is a delightful warmth. Apples. Pronounced woodiness (without aging?). Finishes with a jucifruit gum flavor. Delightfully powerful.
Very complex, nice heat and long finish. Very grassy and vegetal, tomatoes, olives, salt but also citrus peels. I was surprised with the sweet, aspartame-like, anise finish. It’s almost like having the lingering feeling of an artificial sweetener on your tongue. I’m impressed by that but it was a little overpowering. Makes a fantastic rum sour.
