It surprises me that people will pan this um at the price we pay. Were it a $50 rum I could see hem complaining but we all know why we drink our rum, taste and smoothness. This rum has both for such a cheap sipping rum.
Taste: Hints of caramel and vanilla, an oaky finish with a slight floral back taste of honey. True, it is sweet, but some people prefer that in a sipper, so why do those who don't care for a sweet sipper feel they need to put down every sweet rum? Get over it, rate your type of rum and stay away from sweet sippers.
Smoothness: Yes, this is referred to as a "blend of rums aged up to 16 years" but it is VERY smooth, so whether it be 8, 12, 16 years, does the number matter when the rum is smooth?
For the price, a great sipper.
Beau rhum de dégustation, beau nez, bon en bouche et une belle finale. J'espère trouver le 12 ans pour y goûter.
Its a masquerade. Don't fall for it. I could have saved $10 by buying the Abuelo 7 year and added another free muddler to my collection. I would have had a better rum and some swag too.
Slightly disappointed - I like vanilla but this was a bit too overpowering.
Feh. Never tried Zaya and decided to take the plunge. How could I go wrong with the 16 yr old?
How wrong I was. First impression was "So that's what it would taste like if you mixed rum and cream soda". Further tastings did nothing to improve that impression.
Pretty nasty overall, even mixed with copious amounts of Coruba to dilute it, the foul cloying stench never seemed to retreat Makes me reticent to try the 12..
Tasted at Laka Lono on 7/9/19. This is the new version and not the old one with the woven thatch neck. Mild. Very mild. Almost like it has been watered down. Massive vanilla aroma. Sickenly sweet vanilla flavor. Too much vanilla. A sad vestige of the original.
Zaya is pretty popular within our family, so much my sister's dog is named after it.
I am not sure the 16 year old is worth the extra price over the regular 12 year old. Its still a good rum, but i prefer to mix it with coke rather than just on ice.
If this is the best they have to offer then I have bought my first and last Zaya rum. Just tastes artificial and sweet. There is sweet and then there is artificial sweet and this is the latter. Certainly not awful tasting rum but, I am sorry, for the $30 I spent there are a lot of much better real tasting rums that come in at a better price. I find it impossible to believe that any more than a tiny percentage of this blended rum has been aged for 16 years.
Easy and sweet, vanilla on the nose and taste. Not many layers nor complex. A bit pricey (CAD $65 ) For its quality.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Yes. It’s a lot less sweet than the 12yr but still very generous in the vanilla and butterscotch department. Overall, still not my cup of tea but decent if you’re in a bind.
