Depaz 2003 Brut de Fût 15-Year rum

Depaz 2003 Brut de Fût 15-Year

Martinique | Agricole | 58.5% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled

Depaz 2003 Brut de Fût 15-Year is a premium aged rum that is distilled and produced in Martinique, an island in the Caribbean. It is made using sugarcane juice, which is fermented and then distilled before being aged for 15 years in oak barrels. The rum has a dark amber color, with a rich and complex aroma that includes notes of vanilla, caramel, and smoke. On the palate, this rum is full-bodied and spicy, with a long and lingering finish. It is an excellent sipping rum that can also be used in cocktails or paired with dessert.

There are different brut de futs available from Depaz, varying according to age and degree of alcohol. I tried the 2005 brut de fut no. 503 with 58,2%. Very intense nose of a true and well bodied agricole. The palate is extremly spicy and it takes some moments until the mouth can direct the attantion to the plentiful, deep and great flavors this rhum certainly has. Verly long, almost endless finish. So this is a very great rhum but in my opinion the intensity and spiciness do not render it as a candidate for an evening sipper but more as some kind of special experiment. Therefore just an 8.

Visited the Depaz Distillery while vacationing at Martinique. Distillery tours were closed, so got the Depaz Brut de Fût 2003 from a local grocery store. Pretty decent old school bottle and label design with a very flimsy cardboard box. Traditional very dry Rhum Agricole notes followed by grass, strong oak and floral bouquet to your nose and palate. Strong burn at the end. Rhum Agricole lovers can easily add 2 points to my score.
