This is a high end rum. To properly rate this rum you need experience (especially you should be able to enjoy heavy aromas like wood varnish), knowledge of rum tasting, developed taste buds and the ability to enjoy high proof spirits. Otherwise you are wasting your money and this lovely rum.

I already had a bunch of MG rums. Let's see what Velier delivers and is it worth the extra money. Therefore I will compare it directly with MG XO triple cask. I know, it's David vs Goliath but lets see. Velier costs 80€ but MG is 7 years older.

This rum needs at least 30min in the glas to open up, better to give him 45-60min. I turns very floral after 60min, I prefer to drink it after 45min (it's the time where the rum is most balanced).
Velier: Gently nose, flowers, grains, caramel, orange zests and dry fruits. This is another kind of MG, great, more heavy. I get also heavy notes of leather and wood varnish, lack.
There are some similarities with MG XO triple cask, the nose is not that earthy and sweeter, much more complex and more balanced. MG XO is a little bit straight forward, there are some of the Ward aromas but unbalanced, herbs and vanilla is covered by wood and orange, it's also less sweet in the nose. I prefer the Ward, it's much better.

Ward: Let's take a sip without judgement. Salt, caramel, grains, wood wohoho. This is a very complex one. Then orange peels, molasses and anise with mint.
What a great blend, holy Moly. It continues with wood varnish, grains and leahter.
My mouth is full of mint and leather, some flowers are also still there. This is an exceptional rum.
Let's taste MG XO, almost watery taste in comparison to Ward. But initial taste is with burned sugar, oak and orange peels. MG XO is not as complex and rich as Ward. Ward is clearly the winner.

Ward tastes different with every sip :) On one sip I think of a Caroni, on another of Clarendon, there is so much going on in this rum. It's very complex, I see this Ward on the same level as Caroni.
Many reviewers mentioned cherries. I can't smell or taste any cherries at all.
I would rate that one with 93 points.

Nose: wood varnish, anise, orange zest, leather, medical note, flowers
Taste: wood varnish, salt, leather, grains, wood and tanins
Middle: anise, wood varnish, orange zest, wood and tanins
Finish: spice, oak (tanins), earth, salt, leather, wood varnish and mint
Aftertaste: orange peels, oak, leather, oranges, peppermint, anise seeds

Sweetness: 1.5/5
Fruit: 3/5
Spice: 3.5/5
Mildness: 2/5
Complexity: 5/5
Intensity: 5/5
Value (80€): 5/5
Experience level: expert

Rich notes of cinnamon, cassis and cherries greet the taster in this magnificent tipple. It is higher proof so I highly recommend letting it breathe for at least 9 minutes (1 minute for every year in the cask is my go to ratio). Rum novices will probably be turned off by the initial harshness but after building your taste buds, this is truly something to cherish.

OK, it does NOT remind me of standard Mount Gay rums. It is big, odd, fruity, charred...And great. Love it.

Ty vole, to je dobře nabušená jízda. Výrazný nos a ještě výraznější chuť. Čerstvě nalakované dřevo, pomeranče, trocha dehtu a milion dalších vjemů.
Po druhém napití, zhruba po roce, ubiram body.

Velier Last Ward is a vintage single Cask Rum from Barbados made by the Mount Gay Distillery. It was manufactured in 2009 and was allowed to store in oak barrels for 9 years. Then the rum was bottled unfiltered, without additives and in barrel strength of 59% alcohol. The bottle design is typical Velier with lots of information.

My nose was completely surprised at first. I already know some Barbados rums. Everything is a little different here. Reminiscent of Jamaica. The rum comes with a strong fruity and adhesive note. Also dried fruits and grassy notes. The longer the rum is in the glass, the more the wood notes come through. Oak and vanilla. Caramel. Fantastically complex there is a lot to discover here. On the palate, the picture continues. Fruity notes dominate with a slight vanilly note. Fresh berries. Young oak and Bourbon. Multi-layered, with a full body and complex, it goes to the finish, which is accompanied by more barrel notes and some bitter substances. The aromas remain long and confident in the mouth.

Wow. Just great. This Mount Gay Rum is in an other league than the XO. Hard to compare. Diluted, however, it actually comes closer to it and you can see that it's Mount Gay. Very tasty and complex, the rum is worth the 100 euros if you are looking for a rum to discover over and over again. It is now a top rum on my shopping list. Thanks for the samples and the opportunity to try it.

Erinnert fast an Jamaika.

This was presented to me as a top quality and highly valued rum, but I was upset. Not my taste and too expensive for another try.
