Smooth. Tasty. Neat or in my favorite mixed drink, Pain Killer. This is a favorite of mine.
It's really good as a mixer, on the rocks, but the sweetness is a little heavy.
Too sweet in my opinion so as to prevent one from drinking quickly or in great quantity. Flavour like butterscotch. Not bad but not great.
Edit-- 4 months later and still sitting on counter without being able to drink. Everything is just better than this sweet syrup.
Ever since my first taste of this, I’ve loved it. In-your-face unique rum.!
Let me start by making clear: this is not a neat sipper; however, what this rum does for cocktails is magical. 0.5 oz in almost any tiki drink's rum blend adds a whole other dimension of molasses-y goodness. My secret weapon for many rum cocktails.
I have tried other Cruzan Rums so I saw this at a small store.
Nice on the nose. I like slightly sweet rums and this is good for me. Cruzan is a budget rum and this is pretty good for the price.
This one definitely has a weight to it, it's sugary and very molasses-forward but not all in a bad way. It's more a less a mixer that shines pretty well in Jungle Bird, Pina Colada, and I'm sure it would be good in the Pina Colada adjacent Painkiller. It's sippable if you prefer a sweet sipper with a bold molasses note.
Overall: 6.5 - unique and worth a try.
Tasted at Laka Lono on 1/26/22. The gem of the Cruzan lineup mostly because they have no competition. At $18 a bottle, this is a must keep rum for tiki drinks. Molasses aroma, molasses flavor. Very black. Great licorice chocolate sweetness without the anise flavor, if that makes sense. Delightful.
Was excited about this as a floater for a dark n stormy or a nice rich rum for tiki drinks. It was not what I expected. Think of corn syrup with a little bit of spice on it. Overpowers any cocktail I put it in, with sweet almost fake maple syrup taste.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

A lot of molasses flavor, not a sipper but great for a unique rum & coke or a bold dark & stormy.
