Has some pleasant sweetness to go along with some oakiness to reduce the sweetness so it isn't over the top. Baking spices and vanilla are also evident to give this a nice flavor. I have only sipped this rum neat and enjoyed it a lot. Kind of similar to Old Monk XXX.
UNFORTUNATELY, THIS RUM IS NOT EASY TO FIND.
Warning: if you open one of theese, the cork (plastic, screw) will not function again. So unless you are at home, this must be emptied in one sitting.
I have had a couple of theese during a yearly Pirate festival in Vestfold, Norway. The first time we bought it because of the cheap price and the ship on the bottle. The cork broke and since we were on a small boat we could not out it safely down anywhere untill it was empty. S
Taste was awfull.
To be fair: it might be good sippet carefuly with some dark chocolate or raisins on the side. I was in my early 20s and chugged it while wearing a full pirate-garb. Hated it.
The next day a friend arrived the festival. He was really eager to show us a cheap rum he had found at the liquer-store. It was cheap and had an image of a ship on it...
Every year for 4 years we brought someone new to the festival. Every time some of them brought an bottle of Old Port to be shared. Every time they ended up drinking it alone.
Tldr: do not buy! Even if you are dressed as a pirate.
Nice, dark amber colour in the glass.
The flavours seem to explode in your mouth and then settle to the back of your mouth.
There is a good lingering aftertaste, however the initial alcohol burn is a bit more than what I prefer.
Mixing with Coke or putting into Hot Chocolate creates a really flavorful, enjoyable drink
Tried the Old Port Matured East Indian Rum and initial impressions looked good. Nice looking bottle, fancy little story on the label, dark alluring color, and a very pleasant smell to the nose. Then it's downhill from here. The rum has a damp cellar taste and a rather offputting afterburn plus a strong alcohol kick at the end. So much lost potential with this particular rum.
A very enjoyable rum, the Old Port Deluxe Matured is dark, sweet and very atmospheric. It has a lot of character, although I understand some of the below sentiments that the taste can be somewhat artificial in taste, but I think that's mostly due to the lack of proper spark in it. It's a very good sipper, but I would not recommend this to the experienced tongue. I do however love it, I would always have one ready for consumption!
Using coke should be avoided, I find it to make the drink too bland and really steals away the distinct character that this rum has.
I find myself Liking this one more than I should. its a decent sipper. nose is sweet oak and almost cherry red wine like. tast upfront on the tounge is a little thin but sweet with a peppery cinnamon after a bit. going down it explodes with spice and oak flavore that actualy makes this one worth sipping

Pleasant Suprise 7 out of 10
I really enjoyed this rum. I think you get a lot of the cask flavor. It was something new and different and I'm glad I got it.
