My first visit with Charbay was last moth Father’s Day weekend when my sons found the most unusual eclectic rums I never had before. The Charbay was too much for all of us straight, burning followed instantly with hiccups. So rough I must not have rated it. Now taking others recommendations softened it up with a little ice. Much better but not hitting me like drinking from the holy grail. Not sure how to describe it unusual like some of the Chairman special cask strength releases, not truly enjoyable, but special gift from my sons lifts it a point.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I was looking for another expensive rum to try, so I thought I'd take a chance with this ~$400 rum as the first person to review it.
At first, I disliked it. At 68.5%abv, it simply burned my mouth, and I could barely taste it. But after a few sips, my mouth adjusted to it, and it turned out to be a really nice rum.
Smells and tastes of sweet sugarcane, leather, cinnamon, honey, oak, and vanilla, with a hint of smoke.
If it's too much for you at 68.5%abv, add a splash of water and/or ice and you'll easily taste the notes I describe above.
Pretty good, especially if you're a rum purist who doesn't like a lot of added flavors.
