I really enjoyed this rum on ice. I bought two bottles after visiting the distillery in New Orleans. I found it to be both sweet and a bit spicy at first taste. I liked the sweet finish as well. I found it went down a tad too smooth, meaning I have none left.
I picked up a smaller bottle of this in NOLA for $30. The nose is similar to a mix of Hamilton Pot Still Black and a Rhum Agricole vieux. The mouth starts with some heat then comes a vanilla, burnt sugar, kettlecorn, spices. Has a bit of an aged agricole whiskey flavor, not sweet but smooth with some ice. I like a LOT of different rums so I would give this a 7 but I think if you prefer sweeter sippers like Diplimatco or Plantation 20 ( which I love also) then you might not dig this. The previous review is a bit confusing to me because it’s not that bad at all but try it for yourself if you find yourself in NOLA.
This 1718 Tricentennial Blend was released on February 1, 2018. It comes in half bottles for about $23 which was too easy to pass up. It was made to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the city of New Orleans where I grew up. As we all know, New Orleans is very different from the rest of the USA and this distiller went way out of their way to make this rum VERY different from all other rums. However, cherry staves and Madeira casks have absolutely NOTHING to do with New Orleans, which should have been my first clue that it would not appeal to me. I am also not a fan of rums aged in port or sherry casks, which are close cousins to the Madeira wine casks.
The aroma of this pale yellow liquid is pungent alcohol as if it was some cheap brandy. I let it breathe for a few minutes, but it has no age statement to guide the breathing time. This cut the unpleasant aromas a bit. On the tongue it was floral with a bit of burn. Going down the old Aesop Hagus was a bitter burn. All in all, I would rate this wannabe rum as a 2 and am sorry that I even opened the bottle. If you do buy one, don't open it because it could become valuable to collectors many years later.
I had to add 2 parts ruby red grapefruit juice to one part of this mess of a rum to disguise the taste. It still felt like poison going down my throat and I wound up flushing most of it down the toilet. It is almost as bad as my all time worst rum, my 1 star rated Brugal Anejo.
