I was surprised that rum could be drank straight. The smooth taste and lack of heat was surprisingly refreshing.
When you present this botte at a tasting it comes with a great story about the brand and about alcohol in India and the army there. The bottle is also very special. Unfortunately the taste is not very spectacular.
I almost get a pancake syrup from the smell.
It’s alright for sipping though, flavor is lacking in depth etc. Cocoa, burnt sugar. Lingers
Very tasty as I enjoy all of the Old Monk Line. Hard to find rum!
Not much aroma to speak of besides alcohol and some sugar residues.
At sip, a lot of burn hits the tongue and nose, followed by warm brown sugar and molasses with a tiny hint of vanilla. Not much evolution after that.
I would gladly sip this one, but wouldn't demand it when it's gone.
It’s a nice thing to have on hand when my friends from India are over. Otherwise I prob wouldn’t buy it.
Who doesn’t laugh at the bottle? :-)
Sweet and smooth, vanilla and caramel notes, no oak
On the nose very sweet and vanilla.
Taste: to me taste like a flavored medicine.
The bottle is cool I might have to consume it in some cocktail.

Updating this review after a long time, originally I gave a 4. I was unable to find any cocktail that could use this rum, the medicine flavor still lingers no matter what you add to it. So after all I decided to throw it away (Life is too short to drink sh.. like this) and keep the bottle. This is probably the worst rum I have ever tasted.
It’s very sugary, caramel, toffee, brown sugar.
"Old Monk is very much a molasses, chocolate, toffee sweet rum rather than tropical fruits or lighter notes."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Love the bottle. Richer taste than the xxx. Not a sipping rum. Strong vanilla overtone. Best with cola.
