Newfoundland Screech

Not one that I drink all the time but it is nice for a change now and then.

I was born and raised with this around the house. Screech was rubbed on my gums as an infant while I was teething. It was my first rum to ever taste and I took to it quite well. I have no problem keeping this at my bar but it is not the screech of old and my tastes have matured.

This was the first rum I bought, because it was the cheapest. I've tried several others since, but I still come back to this. It's got a bit of that funk and a bit of the molasses taste. I'd rank it with Coruba and Appleton Signature and will keep one of these 3 on hand.

I suppose it's meant to be a mixer, but I sip it neat.

But, then, I would do the same with cheap vodka.

A sweet and fruity aroma, toffee The taste is quite light, a little bit sweet, the finish is rather bitter.

This was the response to hearing someone gasp after tasting the drink of choice among the sailors in the Newfoundland port, which was the center for trade between the Caribbean and Canada.

The drink itself was not the screech, that was the sissified cry of an unprepared imbiber. The name stuck of course, and the reputation has turned into legend.

I had no idea what screech was, other than something my newfie friends spoke of. Had I known it was rum, I would have checked it out sooner!

There is no doubt that the original version of this drink was significantly stronger than what we have here today, but I have to say that it is actually very good!

I was able to find this at a large number of local retailers, at a fair price, and drank it straight. Lordtunderin by, wheres me boat?

If you like Demerara rum, you will probably like this. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised, and cant wait to slip this into rotation at a tasting when we can finally do those kinds of events again.

Not as horrible as I thought, but still not great. No idea how this was distilled in Jamaica.

I was surprised at the dark colour and the sweet flavour as I thought the brand might just be a marketing gimmick. However I was happily satisfied with the sweet flavour especially for the low end price tag.

What a great experience to have a rum from a cold climate country, Canada. Unfortunately, harsh and unbalanced.

Decent tasting rum. Drank it mixed with Coke and also had it with pineapple juice. Good rum to have a good time with friends. Definitely good every day rum.
