Tonight’s Rum: Sērum Ron De Panama! I got this treat from my great friend Al in honour of my birthday last week. We’re semi-drinking buddies. They (the company) say: Sērum Gorgas Gran Reserva is an internationally awarded, super-premium blend of rums aged up to 8 years in ex-bourbon casks. Awarded the Gold medal in the category of “Rums from 6-10 years, column still” and “Best rum 2020” trophy at HK IWSC Cathay-Pacific! I like bourbon, so this might be a good one!
In the glass it’s lighter in colour as I expected vs that in the bottle, golden and like the Appleton Signature. On the nose I find pineapple and raw cane, honey and, oddly, a hint of raspberry jam. It has a sweet odour. The legs in the glass are sparse and appear weak, but that’s not a bad thing, just an observation.
The first hit on the lips is sweet as the nose revealed. It doesn’t bite, but does have an air of cough syrup to it and that’s a bit of a shame. On the tongue there is a message of spice to it leading with vanilla and almond. There’s touch of honey and leather in there and orange peel giving both flavour and bitterness. It’s kind of artificial. Sip after sip pepper emerges unlike many other rums that grow milder as you sample.
In the throat it’s fair to easy heat-wise, depending on your rum experience level. I have no trouble with it, but do note that it has more heat lower in the tummy that in the throat. The finish, is a tad bitter but rich in honey which is a bit confusing to the taste buds and brain. It’s strong flavour-wise on the tongue, more so than when sipping. I’ve only experienced few rums like that.
I give this one a 7 out of 10 because of the unnatural sweet impression the rum gives me. Oddly no hint of the bourbon-aged barrels. # 392 of my 500 rum goal. Best served with tart juices like pineapple or neat if you like sweeter rums.
Panama anti-malaria serum, nutty smell and sweet taste. I definitely recommend it to lovers of sweeter rums. I don't understand the current low rating, it's cruel.
Smells like literally nothing, tastes weird - sweet and quite nice at first but the aftertaste is abysmal. Nice with coke tho.
It is a 40% ABV Panamanian rum aged for 8 years in bourbon barrels. Gorgas was a military surgeon who treated workers during the construction of the Panama Canal.
Bottle (new version): It looks like a shrunken plastic baby water bottle. I honestly don't like it much and it looks a bit kitschy.
Color: Amber
Smell: Classic Panama. Sweet with notes of vanilla, caramel, candied fruit (especially orange), Christmas candy.
Flavour: Sweet but watery. It's quite smooth. The palate is also dominated by vanilla, caramel, marzipan, gingerbread, some tropical fruit and a little wood.
Finish: Short
Conclusion: It's not a bad rum, but unfortunately it's also not interesting and not different from the other Panamanian rums I've tasted so far.
Rating: 6.5/10
Very sweet, but I liked, sweeter than Diplomatico or AH Riise Black Barrel
It's way too sweet, like a syrup. A strong taste of cinnamon.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Another average rum, very fine with honey. Always drinkable, but mainly, when there is nothing better to drink. And sure I didn't notice any signs of reserve.
