Sampled this spiced rum liqueur at the Penllwyn Ddu in Llandygwydd, nr Cenarth, West Wales, after talks with the barman describing my self as somewhat of an aficionado with regard to rum. A lady at the pub suggested I try the local tipple Barti Ddu - pirates juice as I was told, and juice it was a syrupy, spicy mess.

A friend that moved to the area was bought a double by a local who was slightly hesitant at me sampling it.

Nose heavy spiced young dark rum below 3 years easily. Strong cinnamon and vanilla added extracts power through on the palate with undertones of clove and mixed spice. It's syrupy and black and highly sweetened with possibility of the colour deriving from added caramel. The secret ingredient of laverbread I don't pick up and being a Welshman I find it more of novelty liqueur (especially at 37.5% it's definitely Not a sipper) than a fine rum.

I expect good things from these guys though. Aged some rums in Wales for 10-20 years and I'll see what I think.

Not really a rum now is it? Loads of vanilla, very very sweet, syrupy.

Interesting rum

Firstly this is definitely a non aged rum , very young .
The aromas this spiced rum give off are incredible , with cinamon, cloves spices, aniseed and bannana the main taste.

When you first taste you can clearly taste the added caramel so I would be interested in a hydrometer test being done on this rum .

The aftertaste doesn't have an ether burn which is a positive and I'm confident if they aged the spirit it would compete with rumbullion and ainseed heavy spiced rums

I received this for Christmas. Technically Varti Ddu Rum is a liqueur blend of fine Caribbean rum, with wonderful hints of vanilla, spiced and orange. The extra secret ingredient is a subtle infusion of Pembrokeshire laver seaweed, known as Welshman's caviar.

It's also has a cool back story too - it's inspired by a famous Pembrokeshire Pirate, 'Barti Ddu', or Black Bart.

This rum is great both over ice or as a mixer (apple juice or coke) - the spice is subtle, yet warming and really tasty , definitely one to go for if you see it around.

Wonderfully smooth straight with complex flavours, hints of a good aged dark rum, with notes of vanilla and toffee. Mixed its equally dangerous. Something special here and highly recommend people try it.

This bottle didn't say DDU. Vanilla, coconut. Dark amber pour. Sweet finish with some lavender.

So so sweet, almost syrupy. Quite smooth but leaves your mouth feeling lined with sugar, and very strong sweet aromas

Saveur de Orange vanille ce rhum de 35% n est pas trop fort en alcool. Goût très unique probablement à cette algue de mer le pembrokeshire, si j en revois j en rachète une.

I blind tasted this and my first reaction was that it was quite orangey - a bit like a sweeter, more syruppy Rumbullion. As I went through the glass, I detected caramel, cinnamon, mixed-spice and vanilla mainly. I quite enjoyed it and think it would be a good Christmas drink, but I don't think it is as good as Rumbullion or Chairman's Reserve Spiced, so I won't be buying a bottle.
Nonetheless, I'm happy to have a glass of this.

Possibly the worst rum I have ever tried. Everyone to their own, but I have taken cough medicine that I would give a higher rating than this concoction.

Really enjoyed this, the samphire infusion really comes through and gives it a unique taste
