Trinidad Caroni 1996 34th Release
A 20 year old 1996 Caroni from which 3800 bottles were bottled with a strength of 57.18%.
Smell: A very balanced Caroni with very subtle dirty notes. I pick up caramel sweetness, leather and wood notes first. Candied fruits and dried fruits (plums) increasingly escape from the glass. It is very round and harmonious. So round that I miss more dirty flavors.
I smell more wood and the orange zest, also some Bourbon aromas from the barrel. A little tar with leather lies in the background over all notes.
A very nice smell, but not as refined as that of the Kirsch Caroni.
Taste: slightly sweet and dirty start. The first thing I notice is the nice sweetness of burnt sugar and dried fruits in combination with the tar. This is a great start. It continues to develop and becomes slightly drier, with tannins, oak and some gum aromas. The tannins are not dominant and make a harmonious impression in combination with the barrel aromas. It goes on and the wood with the wood varnish and orange zest is now emerging.
The finish is characterized by dried fruits and barrel aromas with orange zest. Some wood varnish still lingers.
Aftertaste: Here we still have the wood varnish, orange zest, tar and the wood, leather.
This is a very good and harmonious Caroni with a nice balance. The intensity doesn't knock me off my feet, I could imagine some more abv here. The complexity is there, but it is not enough to compete against the best Caronis. That's why I would give 93 points here.

Full bodied, with a plethora of tastes. Not too much petrol either.

und ja, der jahrgang von 1996 war wirlich sehr gut. es ist alles vertreten was man bei einem caroni erwartet und läßt auch faßt keine wünsche beim geschmack und geruch aukommen.

1996 war ein Spitzenjahr was Caroni betrifft,hier wurde auch der wohl beste Caroni aller Zeiten ,der Caroni speziell abgefüllt für Kirsch Whisky hergestellt.
Genau wie der Spitzenjahrgang 1974 sind diese Flaschen praktisch nicht mehr erhältlich und wenn für die meisten Rumfans unleistbar,diese Flaschen müssten 14 Punkte bekommen.
Diese Abfüllung ist hingegegen noch gut zu bekommen und auch bezahlbar,mit der zur gleichen Zeit abgefüllten Heavy Full Proof Version mit 70,1% zählen Sie meiner Ansicht nach ebenfalls zur Caroni Top Liga. Wer an dieser 57,18% Flasche Gefallen findet sollte sich unbedingt auch die 70,1 % Version besorgen welche zur Zeit noch problemlos und mit um 400 Euro recht günstig zu haben ist.Wären wir bei Whisky so würde diese Flasche Tausende kosten.............
Nun zur Verkostung dieses herrlichen Tropfens:
Schon beim ersten Tropfen auf der Zunge entfalten sich die ganz 1996 typischen Aromen wie eine Explosion im Mund,,eine gehörige Portion Früchte mit einer angenehmen Süsse,etwas Vanille und Anis und dann dazu die Caroni typischen dreckigen Aromen,einfach eine geniale aber auch brutale Mischung,Nichts für Anfänger.
Dann ein unglaublich langer Abgang,die Reifezeit von 20 Jahren war wohl perfekt. Manche Vertreter dieser Art haben eher schon ein oder zwei Jahre zuviel im Fass abbekommen,dieser hier defintiv nicht.
Fazit. absolute Spitzenklasse für Caroni Liebhaber,bei den momentanen Preisen Kaufen Kaufen Kaufen und Bunkern,so einen Rum wird es sehr wahrscheinlich nie wieder geben und die vorhandenen Restbestände dürften bald abverkauft sein.....
