Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

Not the biggest Barbados rum fan but my friends absolutely loved this. Well balanced. The perfect baseline for an xo rum.

This is the first rum I've come across where the older the rum, the less I like it. Almost universally, I prefer aged rums, but this one just takes on too much wood and bitterness. The XO should be in the sweet spot, but there's something I dislike about it. Not bad enough to drop it to a 4, I'd still drink this with sugar and lime. 4 is where I start to reconsider my life decisions, but I don't think I will be exploring Mount Gay again soon.

Great tasting rum as a sipper, enjoy the taste and aroma. This was my go to rum but during Covid it doubled in price.
