Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

So the story goes like this - I was still pretty fresh rum sipper and I wanted to treat my self with something "better". At local discount my eyes crossed with something that looked very decent, not toi mention the "XO" sign which I thought was a guarantee of getting really nicely aged rum*. At first the taste was too strong and dry for me, but later I realised that Mount Gay XO is one of my favs!
No strong ethanol smell, amazing pure cane sugar scent, slightly dry, slightly tart in the mouth, but with a soft, pleasant finish. I drunk it solo, but I also added it to cocktails and with that kind of rum any drink was SUPERB.
Definitely it would be a must-have in my cabinet and I'm curious about other Mount Gay rums.
Good concentrated and extractive rum, a bit harsh on the opening, but complex and layered, not the sweet type. Medium complexity, needs to be a bot chilled, great value for the price.
Subtle spice permeates through the whole experience but then appears strongly on the finish. Full-bodied and present from the moment it enters ones mouth and the finish seems to go on forever. There isn't too much sweetness going on but has the occasional undertone. £55 retail is a very fair price to pay for a woody rum that makes itself felt in each sip.
Rating: 7/10
Smell - raisin, woody, demerara sugar
Taste - dried fruit, treacle, banana, little spice
After Taste - medium to long lasting, woody, nutmeg, very present, holds really well
Typical MG quality; but bourbon’s need for new casks every batch means other distillers are going for their old barrels (cheap); but if I wanted to drink bourbon, I would!
Off topic, but don’t drink Scotch that’s been in US wood either. Tastes rough and cheap. Needs Sherry wood.
The thing is this: rum producers must compete for drinkers who are often more familiar with other spirits — so unfortunately they borrow these others’ methods. And they shouldn’t! (What is Appleton thinking? 30yo rum indeed!)
Clean go to with complex flavor. Caramel, vanilla and smooth. Great sipper, neat or on rocks.
I really enjoyed this one. For sure one I can recommended.
Its smell is sweet, i feel vanilla, allspice. Its taste is not too sweet, not too dry, quite complex, really excellent. The finist is also spicy, hot.
Really good one, i recommend it.
Myślę że żaden miłośnik rumu nie powinien pominąć tej butelki. Gorzka czekolada, wanilia, kokos, nuty dębiny. Karaiby zamknięte w butelce

'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."

Less sweetness, more fun 9 out of 10
This is one of my favorites as it's fairly different from the ones that I usually drink. In my opinion, it's not even sweet, has a good woody aroma and has a bit of nice wamth when swallowing. Used to be my sipping rum for laid back evenings.
