This is a smooth rum, sipped neat or with one ice. Its sweetness is limited. I enjoy it over a calm evening.

I'm going to be a bit controversial here. I had much higher hopes when I bought a bottle of Mount Gay XO in Barbados last year. I actually think the double blend is way tastier (as it has notes of Whisky) while the production process of this one is so overthought that it ends up tasting like a smooth cognac (yeah, with notes of toffee). That's not what I expect from a dark rum to be honest. Kudos to Mount Gay for marketing though. It really is well placed.
Was lucky enough to hit the Mount Gay distillery in Barbados... and drank this throughout the whole trip there. The best was hitting a Friday street fair and getting rum and coke from a vendor... a small bottle of XO, a plastic cup with an ice cube, and a can of coke. I ditched the coke.
The most complex rum we've ever had. And the history of attitude was also complicated - from "My God, what did we buy? I won't go blind?" due to the aldehydes of freshly painted lacquer wood at the beginning, to a deep velvety honeyness and dryness of barrel aging after half a year from the bottle was opened.
Refined and strict, like a gentleman's suit, it takes time to develop and a special moment to appreciate.
A really nice pure rum! I have also tried it with the advised Coconut water ice cubes, but the coconut is then tanking over. Just drink it straight on the rocks.

'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."

Good sipper 7 out of 10
This is a nice sipper but falls a little short in excellence. I prefer the Mount Gay Black Barrel to this.
