Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

I've tried lots of dark rum offerings over the years but this one is my absolute favorite. The experience is amazing from beginning to end. It looks great in the glass and the first sip is immediately loaded with burnt sugar and molasses. Spices and caramel follow and the swallow is out of this world without much burn or fire. An amazing rum! I do like to try other rums just for variety and adventure but I always have this one on the shelf for those days when I deserve a reward!
If you’re looking for a decent rum with a burn and not very sweet, Mount Gay XO is a good option. I’d prefer it to be a little sweeter but it is not bad.
Excellent balance of fruit flavors. Rounded with a smooth finish. Leaves a nice taste in the mouth.
Almost perfect on most levels.
Enjoy!
8:The nose of this Barbados rum is all balance and sweetness. Coconut enters first, followed by the tobacco of a mild cigar. There's thickness. One thinks of a butterscotch or a vanilla crème brûlée. The coconut is always at the forefront, slightly warmed and lightly toasted. The fruit is also worked on: the banana is cooked and the mango stewed. There's more power on aeration, the profile is less buttery, there's no boredom. Now it's the more vegetal, woody side of coconut that comes through, mixed with almond. In this more refreshing dynamic, we return to fresh fruit with more acidity.
8:The palate is not overly sweet, and this is a rum with character. A hint of mango pulp initiates a smooth mid-palate, with full-bodied tobacco and butterscotch. The rum is full-bodied and never alcoholic.
7,5:The finish melts like butter. A caramelized woodiness remains, a sign of fine maturity.
Beautiful to drink, smooth and delicious, a great rum
It really tastes aged. I already liked the cheap mount gay but this is really tasteful
If you don't have much to spend this is the rum you should try at least once
Reading about the Distillery in Modern Carribean Rum, so why not open a bottle of Mount Gay. A combo of fruit and oak with some buttery tones on the nose. The palate shows more fruit than oak. However it is a bit thin, without much body (probably due to coming in at 43 ABV).
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
