Mount Gay Eclipse rum

Mount Gay Eclipse

Barbados | Gold | 40% ABV

Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.

Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

Stingy taste. Alcoholic, no smoothness. Belongs to cheap garbage tier along with cheap Bacardi and Havana Club.

Jedna sa o rum bez akehokolvek pridaneho cukru, takze chut je fakt sucha, pripomina whisky, urcite to niekomu chutit moze, ja si to ale viac nekupim :)

Disappointing. Can't drink it neat, it's a push to use for mixing, likely to end up in the drain tbh, won't ever buy again, but willing to try their higher end bottles

This was the first rum I ever purchased. It was the start of my rum adventure and for that I will always be greatful. I was looking to make homemade egg nog and use the more traditional addition of rum, from the early Americas. In that role it works great. It is a little rough around the edges when compared with other blended lightly aged rums like El Dorado 3 or Plantation 3. As such, I find it less versatile.

When you need something that a few ounces will punch through dairy like in egg nog I would recommend this rum. It is because other alternatives work better in more cocktails that I would give it the 4/10.

As many others have noted, this entry level rum is not meant to stack up against more expensive neat sippers. For me this will always be a cocktail class rum, and for that it does a serviceable job.

Kind of tastes like captain Morgan without the added spices/vanilla. There are many better rums for a similar or lower price out there: Plantation Barbados 5, Angostura 7, etc.

Smell: Strong young alcohol notes, brown sugar, green bananas, green grass. The smell is not that repulsive - it just smells like a really young unsweetened at all rum without any complexity.

Taste: This is where it gets quite bad... There is no added sugar at all (this could probably help it) and it tastes as a cheap unaged rum - quite a burn - no complexity at all - just some strong alcohol notes (related to cheap, rushed vodka) and on top of that there is a bitter aftertaste... Bacardi Black or even Captain Morgan will feel premium in comparison even if they are cheaper.

Well it is truly a low/entry rum but I was not expecting this following the reviews here :) (that is why I bough it). Not sure if it could be a decent mixer as I sip rums - 95% of the time.

Harsh compared to other runs of similar price. I would not drink on the rocks unless in a bind. Fairly harsh alcohol flavor. Good for mixing but not worth the price. Rated 3/10 because it is more expensive than better rums.

While this will improve your drinks compared to the Bacardi Superior, there is not much to drewl about.
