Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

This rum is meant for mixing and not to be sipped. Good for a rum and cola.
It's a good rum but I would't call it a 7. It's a step up from the commercial grade mixers. I can say at least MG is making an effort. It's nice to taste fruit as opposed to the gasoline finish of the other Gold rums in this price range.
Definitely not a sipping rum. Can add some depth and flavor to a mixed drink.
This one’s gold in colour and is mildly fruity with a vanilla after taste. There’s a slight smokiness and an alcohol hit right up front which reminds me of whisky. Apparently this rum is aged in toasted Kentucky oak barrels. It seems like a pretty standard gold rum but I’ve not tried many yet.
I did like this rum, but it was nothing special. I am really interested in trying the XO, but I had higher hopes for this one still.
Very 5....
While in Barbados in 2011, my wife and I toured the Mount Gay distillery in Bridgetown and sampled some of their products including Mount Gay Eclipse and Mount Gay Extra Old, both of which we used as mix for rum punches. Upon our return home we purchased a bottle of each.
Fast forward to April 2017, the same two bottles are still in our liquor cabinet but are just about empty. Tonight I sipped on the remainder of both products to determine how the two fare as "sipper" Rum.
I must say that I was doubtful either of these two rums would qualify for decent sipping rums given the fact that 1) they were fairly inexpensive and 2) the bottles had been opened 6 years ago and both were less than 1/3 full.
I was pleasantly surprised with both samples of Mount Gay Eclipse and Mount Gay Extra Old. While the Mount Gay Eclipse rum is light and not as complex as the few aged rums I have sampled, it was nevertheless tasty. In my opinion Mount Gay Eclipse is a better mix than a sipping rum.
The second sample (Mount Gay Extra Old) was darker, tastier and more flavourful than the Eclipse and I really enjoyed its taste. Will without a doubt acquire a bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old in the near future. This rum makes an excellent mix but as a stand alone it is a respectable rum to drink neat. For this reason I will rate this rum as an 8.
The best thing that can be said about this rum is: it’ll help you forget your troubles!
As for the taste ... not good, not bad. Very middle of the road.
But if you’re travelling the Caribbean from your arm-chair, tumbler in hand, you’ll want to make a stop in Barbados.
I’m glad I went there, and perhaps I’ve been a bit hard on it, but I won’t be going back — there are just too many other exciting destinations out there for us intrepid drinkers!

Quite sickly sweet smell.
"When sipped the rum does not exhibit much of these sickly sweet flavours. It’s just very heavy on the alcohol. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
