I wish that more budget rums like this one would simply state what additives were introduced. They specifically state on the back label that it was "softened by dark caramel for balance and finesse". And it could not have been much because it tastes like a semi-dry rum with 10-19 gpl of added sugar by my own estimate. This island favorite was only $19 when it got to a liquor store fairly close to me.
Title says it all. Good underlying flavor of smokiness and oak barrels, actually very good, with just the right sweetness. But, it’s very watery with little mouthfeel and leaves me wanting more fullness of flavor. Also, it’s St. Lucia, not French Polynesia.
This is an unashamedly overproof rum with very strong brown sugar notes. Perfect for cocktails and it makes a mean Pina colada. Can be had neat if you like a very strong drink, but best as a mixing rum for cocktails, maybe not the best for rum and coke. Really comes into its own when in a daiquiri.
Super strong but reasonably tasty. Best with ginger and plenty of fresh lime. Kept me happy sailing around Fiji where the cost of exported rum was extortionate.
Oh man what a torture the Bounty Dark Rum from the Rum Company of Fiji was last year when I tried it out the first and the very last time in my life. Smell is pure alcohol, taste is synthetic rubber and the burn is like 2 day old moonshine. The taste and the burn does not go away even with Coke, so this industrial strength cleaner is better left at the store shelf.
The top 10 worst rums I have ever tried:
1. Barbancourt 4y / 8y / 15y
2. Bounty Dark Rum from Fiji
3. Stroh 40 / 80
4. Plantation Pineapple Stiggin's Fancy
5. Villa Rica 23y
6. Mocambo 15y / 20y
7. Captain Morgan different variations
8. Don Papa 10y / 15y
9. Bacardi flavored "rums", all of them
10. Kraken rums
"It’s still quite caramel heavy. It’s quite bitter. It notes Charred Oak on the rear label."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
