I was bowled over by this rum, that's all there is to it. it's pure heaven to sip or drink on the rocks. There is incredible complexity here, a wealth of lovely flavors from start to finish, and it looks simply gorgeous in the glass. Plus the marketing campaign behind it - including the beautifully-proportioned bottle - gives you plenty to expound upon with novices and aficionados alike. My question is this: is it rum? Created from a blend of rums from five different locations, using both pot and column stills, following by solera-type aging in no less than three types of cask...well, by the end, I wonder if they've lost the thread. Though in my mind superior to the two Dos Maderas products from Williams & Humbert, this rum similarly "steps over the line" when it comes to the heavy influence of wine-derivative flavors (port and sherry). So, if you are looking to experience the directions rum can take in the hands of people willing to explore new ground, this is one exciting rum. If, however, you are a traditionalist who prefers that rum hues close to its roots, with old techniques refined rather than avoided, you had best look elsewhere (like, perhaps, the Zafra 21 Reserve).
Tried it from all the raving being done. Honestly, not impressed. It wasn't bad, but nothing memorable either. I'll probably give it another chance before I cross it off permanently.
Dark color strong caramel scent not as smooth going down as I like but great complex flavors on the palate.
vanilla is the first thing that hits you. Was more one dimensional then I thought it would be. Still pretty good though. visited this again, don't like it as much as I thought.
Strong taste of vanilla comes first and sweetness comes later. Good rum for sweet rum lovers.
i liked this rum. I got heavy caramel notes. A sweet rum with a cool bottle.
Great sipper. Smooth and complex. Hints of coffee and chocolate.
Hints of brown sugar and dark molasses. Slight richness & sweetness from the superb mix of several rums. Wonder to sip or on the rocks. Wit would last a little longer if the neck were a little smaller.
After much searching, I was finally able to find Papa's Pilar in New Jersey. For me it was worth the wait. I prefer a cork opening instead of the screw top with chain, but that does not detract from the quality of this rum. Mild flavors of maple and vanilla make this a very smooth rum, and the 43% alcohol provides a warming, pleasant burn going down.
Sweet a little spicy, yet with slightly bitter coffee notes.
"There is a fair amount of orange peel or marmalade like bitterness, especially on the finish and the aftertaste. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I love everything about this rum. First, the bottle is pure genius. Second, the Hemingway angle is a real winner. Finally, the taste just blows me away. I love sipping on this rum. It is a good thing I can find this pretty easily in New Jersey.
