Kraken Black Spiced

Title pretty much says it all. My tastes run towards flavours of coffee, chocolate, and caramel. Kraken definitely has them in the forefront, but then the alcohol punches you in the face. When mixed in enough Coke, it adds a complimentary dimension of flavour. I can see the potential as a mixer or in baking, but my search for a sipping rum continues.

I usually steer clear of spiced rums as they wind up watered down to 70 proof thereabouts. I bought a bottle for someone as a Christmas gift, and never got a taste. Then I saw the label and knew it wouldn't be watered down. I love the color, reminds me of some beers I have made. A little sweet, the way I like it (hello, Zaya) I have no idea what the spices are, but they work. I just opened the bottle, so I'm kinda looking forward to how it breathes. I reserve the right to come back and edit this.
So I'm back to edit, months later. It's hard to believe this is 94 proof as it's very smooth. I reduced it from 8-7, as I believe the spice is covering up the alcohol, and after a few followup tastings, I think I'm getting a certain "blandness " I didn't pickup before. I like this rum as a sipper, but there are other rums i like more

Picked this up, on the recommendation from a friend. It is a a good spiced rum. Enjoyable on the rocks, or with ginger beer.

So this rum is dark and sweat (with caramel notes) and has some spiciness to it but not as much as one would expect for a "Spiced Rum", I've never had a bad bottle, but I've never had a great bottle. If half bottle ratings were available I'd give it 6.5...but it's not quite a 7.

Good flavor, unique in color and taste, good value.

The best of both worlds, Kraken offers a complex mix of spices with a minty finish. I love the flavour, but it always makes a little war in my stomach so I can't drink too much of it. The legs are thin and color dark, but probably not from aging. For how fancy the bottle is , I expected more.,..but it still makes a nice alternative to CM black spiced for a mixer.

When I first tried Kraken, I wasn't overly impressed. It isn't bad straight, rather spicy with a touch of vanilla, but not that smooth. Mixed with Coke it tasted rather flat and tannic. When I came to try it again with pepsi, the vanilla and spice flavours came out more and it grew on me. Particularly good in a dark n stormy.

The biggest disappointment with Kraken is that it is sold as a dark/black rum, but it is very light on caramel/molasses and is very thin bodied, thus it is not a true dark rum, once you see past that you will certainly enjoy this one.
