Appleton Estate 12-Year Rum is a blend of several rums aged between 12 and 18 years in American oak barrels after being distilled using small-batch copper pot stills.
The rum is produced on the Appleton Estate, which sits in the Nassau Valley in Jamaica. The estate’s origins date back as far as 1655 when the English overthrew the Spanish to rule the island and Frances Dickinson, grandfather of the distillery’s founders, received the land as a reward for his role in the overthrow.

I've tasted this back to back with El Dorado's 12 and 15 to compare. I slightly preferred this one over the other two. I just tried to buy another bottle and the webshop sent me the "Rare Blend 12 year" version. They say it's supposed to be the same content in a different bottle... we'll see.
Attractive appearance - dark rich coppery/red hue its very nice and does suggest the minimum 12 years aging.
On the nose ... has a firm spicy backbone with a deep dark brown sugar and strong indications of baking spice alongside. Oak tannin and citrus zests arise in the aroma as well as a darker more burnt smell akin to charred coconut and caramelized sugars.
These lighter flavours included a light hint of tangy citrus, a touch of spicy orange peel, a mild walnut and toasted coconut. These milder flavours keep the rum interesting, and I seem to be enjoying this a little more each time I return to the rum.
It's classic fruity Jamaica with more spice, wood and long warm aftertaste. Excellent mixer and nice sipper.
Bought in Jamaica during a fantastic trip; this bottle of rum is a part of souvenir. Strong enough as member of Jamaican rums, the taste is at the end a long chart of persistent aroma of leather, riped fruits. Invite your best friends & share this bottle. Enjoy !
A bit of funk on the nose, woody, fruity, spicy on the palate, and most of all superbly balanced. Excellent value rum that can be recommended to everyone!
Bought this bottle with high expectations. It's OK but no where near what I was hoping for at the price and age. I'm no connoisseur, but I do drink a fair amount of aged rum and found this to be on the low side of middle of the pack
This is my go to rum. Drink neat on the rocks or with Coke. Never disappointed. Slightly sweet aroma and flavor
I know many here love this. I'd imagine those that do also predominantly enjoy whisky. To me, this tasted like whisky and not as much like rum as I'd like it to, but nonetheless it's obviously a good quality rum, just not to my tastes.
There's a strong alcohol and wood smell; there's a strong alcohol and oaky taste and cognac and whisky flavour
It's got a strong alcohol burn and kick at the end.
I'd say that it was in the same ball park as Mount Gay Black Barrel - but more bitter and not nearly as good or as complex!
Disappointing as I wanted to like this, having read so much, but having said that on a second tasting it was not so bad - just not as good as I hoped.

The rum offers a lot of smoky spiced oak flavour.
"A nice note of cocoa and a little hint of vanilla. The rum is smooth yet spicy offering a nice kick. The finish is long and complex leaving a lot of flavour behind to savour."

I've heard some good things about appleton estate and for me it was a good taste but a bit on the strong side. I like my rum to be smooth with some hints of vanilla and this one doesn't have that. It's good to put in coke to get a rum bite at the end.
