Dos Maderas PX 5+5

mickjagger1002 avatar image had this rum recently

Barbados | Aged | 40% ABV

Dos Maderas PX 5 + 5 rum is made from a combination of rums from Barbados and Guyana. It is unique becuase of its triple ageding process where for 5 initial years the rum is aged in the Carribean in oak casks. Next PX 5 + 5 is aged in Spain for 5 years in sherry casks, and lastly for 2 more years in even older sherry casks.

The Dos Maderas family of rums are produced by Bodegas Williams & Humbert, which is a well known Spanish winery founded by Sir Alexander Williams in the late 1800s. The region of Spain where the winery is located has a climate perfectly suited for wine and is known as Europe's wine cellar.

Bottle: nice classic bulbous shape + right cork cap
Color: Darker amber
Aroma: wonderfully delicate, rum-scent without any smoky or pungent tails. It is similar to Contadora 15 or Diplomatico 12, perhaps a little stronger.
Taste: Although many reviews say it's more of a sweet rum, it's not quite true. At the beginning it is slightly sweet, but the end is so slightly sharper - whiskey taste. It's a little less sweet than Diplomatico 12 or even the Contadora 15. After a longer sipping, the sharpness disappears a bit (or you get used to it). But it is definitely not dry rum.

I have to admit that the Contadora 15, with which I compared it, tastes a little better. Contadora is not a well-known rum, but it is really good.

But I definitely recommend Dos Maderas. I give 8 points from 10.

This is a great dessert rum. Excellent nose and a genuinely sweet pallette. This bottle never lasts long enough at my house

I thought this rum was very interesting. You do get the sherry and oak on your palate. Reminded me of cognac. I would definitely drink this again.

Dark color, sweet aroma and finished in sherry cask. Not my favorite, but definetly worth a try.

after picking up a bottle of plantation with infused pineapple for a good friend this bottle stood right next to it. i remembered it to be on my wishlist so i treated myself as well. after opening and smelling it i already knew, i'm gonna like this one! and indeed this rum did not disappoint. it's sweet and fruity, much like diplomatico so it's not for the dry rum enthusiasts (they will hate it and call it a non rum lol, or so this site teaches us). i like it even better than diplomatico and that's been my go to rum for a good while. price range is a titbit higher but comparable. this will be added to my "need to have in stock" list. always nice to be surprised!

I have never been a rum person, bourbon and Irish whiskey are more my style. Then I found a rum that like more than Bourbon! I went o Key west and there is a rum bar there, we did a number of flights, this was the rum that we both liked best.
I now have three bottles of rum in my house. This one Dos Maderas 5+5, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, and Bacoo 12 year. This one is my favorite, closely followed by Bacoo 12 year, the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva has too much molasses taste so takes third place.

The Dos Maderas is smooth with a Carmel nose very little alcohol bite and a nice sherry finish. I highly recommend it. However, if you are looking for bang-for-the-buck Buy Bacoo 12 year, it so close of a second that I can not justify paying 50% more for the Dos Maderas...

Now, in order to enjoy this rum, you must be prepared for intense sweetness. The Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks impart loads of rich sugary flavors. Raisins, apricots, figs, etc.
It's been said that they even add some Sherry to the solera casks during continental aging.
All said this is very flavorful rum, but too sweet and not proofy enough for me.
