Dos Maderas PX 5+5

Barbados | Aged | 40.0% ABV

Dos Maderas PX 5 + 5 rum is made from a combination of rums from Barbados and Guyana. It is unique becuase of its triple ageding process where for 5 initial years the rum is aged in the Carribean in oak casks. Next PX 5 + 5 is aged in Spain for 5 years in sherry casks, and lastly for 2 more years in even older sherry casks.

The Dos Maderas family of rums are produced by Bodegas Williams & Humbert, which is a well known Spanish winery founded by Sir Alexander Williams in the late 1800s. The region of Spain where the winery is located has a climate perfectly suited for wine and is known as Europe's wine cellar.

My type of rum. It’s the perfect sweetness and strength, just the way I like it.

One of the nicest, smoothest rums I have tasted. Very nice Carmel upfront with a slight spiciness. There is a nice sherry finish with a substantial bit of heat at the back of the palate as the sip finishes! Very highly rated at a very nice price point.

Pour over one piece of ice & slowly consume. Feel the smooth, delicious flavour of vanilla overtones as you drink.
I drank a bottle in no time at all due to the actual texture & flavour of this luscious liquid.

Good, but a bit simple for my taste. Well structured though. I’d never turn down a glass if offered.

Chuť 8/10
Vůně 7/10
Síla 6/10
Sladkost 7/10

Sladký, příjemné tóny dřeva, rozinek, velmi blízko ke koňaku, minimální vůně esterů. Silnější ale jemný, hřejivý.

Smell: Juicy ripe dates, floral brown sugar, aged cognac, rich sherry, floral oak. Very well balanced, rich and floral – interesting - clean and complex at the same time – medium age shows. It does get more complex when it opens up (30min + in glass) and the sherry old casks influenced it in an unique way.

Taste: Sweet cherry syrup mixed with ripe dates and molasses sugar – it is a little sweetened but still nice quite rich, floral and complex - no alcohol burn at all. Some black tea that brings a slight bitterness and aged oak but not too old. Very full bodied and smooth as a sipping rum. The sherry character really shows and compliments the rum.

Sweet rum very, pleasant/smooth to drink – rich sherry influence that goes well with the character. Definitely worth the higher price at 36€.

For me this is a prime sample of late finisher. Didn't much like its strongly cherry or similar fruit tones and lack of sweetness in the beginning but really started to like it in the end. Reminds me of the lineup of Angostura rums from Trinidad but is maybe less rounded. Overall happy experience, I tend to like "fruity" aroma and taste in my rums.
