An archetypical expression of the style of rums produced by Angostura in Trinidad, the Single Barrel Reserve limited edition rum is hand-drawn and aged in a single select Bourbon oak cask for a minimum of 5 years.
Angostura blends medium and heavy aged rums from their state-of-the-art five column still to create this exclusive blend, available only in Trinidad. A limited number of batches of this deep mahogany colored rum are produced each year for premium rum enthusiasts.
On the nose, Single Barrel leads with light wooden notes and creamy vanilla, leading to hints of chocolate, molasses, macchiato and baking spices. The palate begins with warm honey, dried tropical fruits, toffee and caramel, leading to chocolate, roasted almond and coffee flavors. The long warm finish suggests a fine maturation process.
This stuff is delicious. Friend from Trinidad brought me a bottle (can't buy here in Miami) and I have to say I am very impressed. We sipped this neat all night. It is a smooth rum with very nice toffee and caramel forward flavors. Which are my favorite. There is some fried fruit flavors to go along with it, and a very subtle hint of cocoa on the long after taste. Nothing about it makes it 'pop' as super special for a 9 or 10 rating, but this rum is just solid all the way around. One of my favorites for sure.
This rum has a very rich colour, smooth and aromatic taste without the afterburn. Even ladies who are not rum drinkers say this one is different... they love it with a chaser like coca cola. I love it with fresh coconut water. Ahhhh...
A surprisingly good rum, particularly given the price. Smooth, chocolate and only a little afterburn. On par with the 1919 but not as sweet.
Wonderful sweet taste and flavor. A friend from Trinidad brought me a bottle.
Superior taste. Mellow, not bitter or too sharp.

If Angostura 1919 is Vanilla, this is Chocolate 7 out of 10
A surprising rum for the cost, this bottle of aged rum has a wonderful flavour that is perfectly interwoven with Caribbean history. Tobacco, molasses, chocolate, and dare I say pepper on the nose of this single barrel. A taste that's rich and almost comforting with heavy chocolate and some coffee with spices thrown in, it complements (in the mathematical sense of the word) Angostura's 1919 on flavour, but with a markedly lower price tag.
Shimmering gold, just about reaching dark brown, the colour is as expected of a 5 year rum. Texture wise, very easy to swish in a glass (almost kind of fun after having 2) but there's a creamy mouthfeel that translates into a small burn, just as if to make its mark, mellowing out in the chest.
Overall, good taste, texture, price and nose - this Angostura staple might just surprise you.
Disclaimer: I taste (and drink) all my alcohol (mostly rum) seco, i.e. straight, no ice. If you wish to use this as a mixed drink, please look at another review (which you should be doing anyway, I'm just one man with a subjective palate after all) for a more complete reference.
