Very interesting woody notes. I'm not very familiar with cachacas, but I'm generally not a huge fan of silver cachacas or silver rums, despite Caipirinhas being one of my favorite drinks. I was intrigued to try a dark cachaca. It doesn't have the same dark rich notes of an aged rum, but it is definitely complex. Bit harsh up front, but a very nice aftertaste. The best way I can describe it is like a Dominican Mamajuana, with notes of tree bark and herbs, without the added sweetness of the honey.

harsh but very interesting. Leaves an aftertaste from the zebra wood

Tasted at Laka Lono on 1/2/20. Pours a clown-shoe red color. Has the aroma of grits and sugar cane. Salt, pepper and grenadine got together and had a baby. A burning finish.

First aged cachaça I've ever tasted, therefore I'm not sure if aged cachaça is not for me, or that this perticular spirit just doesn't cut it for me.

Great grassy notes with some real wood bitterness to it. Had it neat, in a caipirinha and an old fashioned. As soon as ice hits it it goes a very strange colour almost like a caramel milk. You taste with your eyes as well as your nose and tongue and it was very off putting. Glad I tried it, was slightly disappointed and finished the bottle of in quite a few batidas. Wouldn’t buy again

Muddy color and mild aftertaste. Wouldn't drink often but worth an occasional sip.

Now, I have never tasted a rum aged in wood other than oak (this spent some time in a Zebra-wood cask!). Its definitely different... the color is unlike any rum I have ever seen (dark mahogany red). There is noticeable sedimentation on the bottom of the bottle (my guess the Zebra-wood is high in tannins) and they either had very limited filtration, or none whatsoever.

It has the familiar cachaca smell - pungent green, vegetal, olives... but this fades to stranger, more unrecognizable smells of tropical spices. The taste reveals a strong influence from the zebra-wood - a significant spiciness, with a tongue-clinging flavor that reminds me of cinnamon and clove. Your tongue is left numb for maybe 5-10 mins afterwards!

Weird... I like it!

I think the “4” rating fits this perfectly - flawed with a glimmer of hope.

The Tanager has a nose of apricot fruit leather, so that's cool! Unfortunately the taste does not follow at all, just coming across like very green, woody bananas. It's smooth enough in the mouth, but there's a definite burn afterward, which is never fun.
