Great before dinner drink as its a little sweet but not to much and very smooth.
A while back I rated the Old Man Guavaberry Republic 5-Year and gave it an 8. Recently I came across a bottle of the 8-year and purchased it. Once again I admit I STILL have never tasted a guavaberry, STILL never seen a guavaberry and STILL wouldn't know one if someone pelted me with one.
My bottle is labeled bottle No. GH0916.
The aroma in the bottle is quite attractive with a fruity sweetness and no stringency. Quite nice.
A beautiful amber liquid is a little sweeter than I am used to but the guavaberry flavor (I am assuming that is what I am tasting) makes it almost a rum liqueur. This is a noticeable improvement over the 5-year which is a good rum as well. It seems the extra aging brought out the quavaberry characteristics more and smoothed out a lot of the rougher aspects. No harsh burn but the warmth is a bit intense. Nice fruity aftertaste.
This rum is manufactured and bottled by the Sint Maarten Guavaberry Company which happens to produce multiple products (including the rum) all centered about the guavaberry. From what I have read, rum made from guavaberries is the traditional drink for Christmas in Sint Maartin. This rum isn't for everyone due to its unique fruitfulness but I think it would make an excellent desert drink as well as a mixer in rum punches and other fruit-based cocktails. Excellent choice.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Slightly better than the Old Man Guavaberry 5-Year rum

I really enjoy the Old Man Guavaberry 5 year rum, and I've wondered if I would ever get a chance to try their 8 year. I just took a cruise that stopped in St Maarten, so I picked up their 8 year, and I do like it a bit more.
Has a nice sweetness to it, and I found it smoother than the 5 year (no surprise). Smells and tastes of guavaberry (the guavaberry is slightly more pronounced in this), oak, and spice. This is a really good rum in my opinion.
