Rich amber in the glass.
In the nose a little bit like the medicine man. There are bags of spices in a low, dark, damp room. Curry herb, lovage, oregano are in the upper bags.
On the palate it looks soft, smooth and sweetish. Caramel in herb coating dipped in vanilla sauce.
In the finish it passes quickly, but the herbs stay longer.
Legal Thai party drug, nothing more.

Saw that it was rated here, I have always thought that it was rice whisky.
There have been some bottles when at vacation in Thailand before I found SangSom which I think is slightly better.
Both works as a mixer together with coke or sprite.

A bit better in taste then the sangsom. But like I rated the sangsom it's more of an nostalgian rum for me. Drink it with pepsi in Thailand on a beach then it tastes good. Do not drink it straight, tastes like petroleum.

I enjoy this representation from Thailand! Yes, it has a very different taste than many of us are accustomed to, but that is what separates rum from one country to the next. Distilled from sugarcane and rice with herbs and spices indigenous of that region creates a nice combination of flavor albeit with a subdued 35% alcohol by volume. I have not tried Mekhong other than by itself as I feel that the distinct flavors and aroma would be sacrificed by adding soda.

I wont open this Thai Rum, since i have bought it for my collection only.
Its cheap, but hard to find in my country, thats the reason for not opening.

What I have been told, should it be good with cola, so i go with that.

It’s pretty smooth but it has some faint flavors, It says some spices actually used. Not much in terms of barrel etc. Slightly sweet but nothing close to a liqueur.
Not sure why the low scores. It’s fine

From Thailand. And said to be a whisky. While I believe the first statement, it could well be from Thailand, the second one is crazy talk. This is obviously distilled from some form of sugar and surely does have nothing to do at all with whisky.
I also believe - in fact: I am sure - that it is flavoured. And there may well be neutral spirit of some form added. So this is a Tuzemak, an Inländer-Rum perhaps. I am fine with classifying this as a form of rum - but some warning needs to be added.

And, very clearly, this is not whisky!

The colour is a reddish brown, quite sure this is artificially coloured.
The nose is interesting, slightly smoky, sweet, there even is some sort of funk going on. And a bit of wood in the background. Not overly alcoholic. And not as smooth and inexepressive as one might fear. Not bad really. Even though I assume that it is aromatized.

Taste is a bit sharp at the start, then giving way to raisiny sweetness, a hint of molasses, some funk, and even some woody notes. Spices are also to be found, I would say nutmeg is most prominent. The finish is quite woody and bittersweet, bordering on semi-dry.

While this is not great by any stretch of the imagination, it is also not terrible. It is not as sweet as one might fear and I find it very drinkable. But there is much better (real) rum to be had at a similar price in Europe.
Still, an interesting experience and I recommend that you have a small glas of it, if your local Thai restaurant should offer Mekhong.

Sold originally as a Whisky here in the Netherlands, but first time I tasted it I knew that it certainly wasn't that. Checking with the importer proved me right. It is now sold as rum, and I guess it technically is, but it just tastes like sweetened alcohol without much else going on. Stay away from this.

Hints of vanilla which I don’t hate. Just didn’t go down that easily. Not bad though. Could certainly be worse.

The taste is a bit like the smell entering an asian supermarket. Definitely something different. Can like it or hate it. I enjoy it, but it will not become a regular buy.
