This was one of those finds in a store that I didn't expect to find anything outside typical cheap flavored rums but they had one and only one bottle of this. At first I thought it was some flavored vodka or something. To be honest, it was the label that caught my attention. It looks like something out of the 1930's. I saw it was labeled "cherry rum" so out of curiosity I bought the bottle.

Out of the bottle the color is indeed a maraschino cherry juice red. Its aroma hints of the cherries but is not sweet. Surprisingly the flavor is not cloyingly sweet like a lot of cheap flavored rum but does indeed taste like they describe: "infused with dark maraschino cherries". The base rum is a little harsh however which takes away from the overall effect and in my opinion diminishes the overall flavor. If they had used an aged rum of 5-7 years, perhaps in toasted oak barrels or virgin oak barrels it might have been much better. The finish is a bit bitter which is a shame. I cannot determine the origin of the rum used. It does not have a major burn but a nice warmth which is surprising since it is 80 proof rum (40% ABV).

Sadly, there appears to be no chance of improvement since the website for Lola Belle Cherry Rum is no more and their Facebook page has not been updated in over 2 years. This indicates that the company is no longer around and the rum no longer made. According to the label, the rum was bottled by Proximo Spirits out of Indiana but they do not list Lola Belle as one of its current brands of rum (they do have Kraken and Matusalem rum listed). Too bad. If a better quality rum was used I think they might have had a nice niche rum which would be excellent in mixed drinks as well as a cherry Cuba libre. Oh well...
