It's not even close for me. I love the heavy brown sugar nose on Hamilton 151 and use it in all my Tiki drinks requiring black overproof rum.
When you combine this with the also brown sugar Gossling's Black Seal for a Naked Ape it's a really fun time.
As I noted in my review of Plantation OFTD, also in this rum category, Hamilton 151 is more of a single note than OFTD. So if you really appreciate complexity then you may like that better.
Bottle purchased in Wichita. Pours dark gold. Aroma of a blast furnace. This is not quite as perfect a product as Lemon Hart, but this will certainly do as a close second choice. Donโt you dare light this on fire. Made it in a classic daiquiri and it really shines with a great Demerara sweetness and a potent heat.
This is the best overproof Iโve tried. If youโre choosing between this or Lemon Heart, get this. It still retains its Demerara roots, and holds up in drinks.
Hamilton 151 is a high proof fire breather. This overproof beast is my number one choice for the overproof in the Jet Pilot tiki cocktail as printed in Smuggler's Cove.
Smooth and almost buttery mouth feel followed by an expected strong throat burn (what do you expect at 75%?). Powerful flavors of butter, brown sugar, molasses, and slight banana. Nice lingering finish that warms your whole chest. For me, slightly better than Plantation's O.F.T.D. which makes it my favorite overproof so far.
I've enjoyed this rum in many tiki-cocktails, as well as neat. It smells like butterscotch and tastes like fiery, buttery cinnamon.
Not that there's a big range in this category, mind you. But holy moly does Hamilton's 151 nail all the roasty toasty sugary Demerara notes, kicked up to 11. If you can handle the heat, it's an incredible sipper, and given that around here it goes for $10 a bottle less than the Lemon Hart Overproof, it's hard to even consider the competition.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This is my preferred 151 rum. Ed Hamilton has done a great job producing a high proof rum that also has wonderful flavor. Molasses flavor is perfect.
