I think I am talking about the same rum. I went to my local store and this one was new. I was totally drawn in by the busy bottle design with a nice curves in the neck and a stamp molded into the glass. You could sit for hours just reading the story on the label. Anyway the rum is strong and dark, a bit harsh as others have stated. Very much like pussers British Navy for my palette.

this rum is not good for the pure taste. if youre drinking it neat, its a bit harsh. but with sugar and lemon juice and ice youยดll get a very good caipi.

Here in Quebec, the Original Dark from Plantation is only available via private import, which means you need to buy at least one case at the time and go through an elaborate ordering process.
Luckily for me, I have some very Rum enthusiastic friends, and so last summer I ordered two cases that we shared together.
Priced at 30$ CAD, I personally think the only other product that matches its quality price ratio is the El Dorado 8 yo. All of my friends agree that it is very tasty and extra smooth. I went through practically an entire bottle with one of my friend the 1st time I tasted it, just sipping it on the rocks (beware, it then becomes extra smooth and dangerous, with delicious coffee and chocolate milk flavours).
Since then I used it in Painkillers and to bake some Rum cakes for the Holidays.
Very recommended.

Got this bottle as a Christmas gift from some friends. They got the version from Trinidad and Tobago, which seems to be the best version looking at the comments here.
For me this is a good mixer, but could be sipped too if your standards are not very high.

Beautiful amber color liquid in the bottle. The aroma is sweet reminding me of melting caramel candy. The flavor is also quite sweet with caramel, vanilla and some spiciness. Definitely too sweet to be a sipping rum. Must be a mixing rum. Tried it in Coke Zero and it didn't work well. The sweetness of the rum just adds to the sweetness of the Coke Zero and it made it seem I was drinking syrup with a little carbonation. I'm afraid it would do the same with fruit-based drinks or other mixed drinks that contain sweet ingredients.

However...

A good use...which I will myself try...appears to be a counter for bitters and coffee drinks. I think a coffee with this rum might actually be ideal.
