Rum Artesanal 2001 Fiji South Pacific FSDP 22-Year

I love the previous 2001 fijian from Rum Artesanal which was one of the greatest fijian I ever tasted. This one is powerful, complex and quite typical too : waxy, dirty, medicinal, very mineral nose which comes perfectly with the more fruity and rounded parts. But this times things maybe came a step too far. That beeing said I have not seen a so complex thing very often. I still liked it a lot but "not for every day", I would say.

This bottling of Rum Artesanal comes from the South Pacific Distillery and was produced in pot still in the legendary 2001 vintage. The rum was allowed to mature for 22 years and was then bottled as a single cask in 225 50cl bottles with a cask strength of 59.3% alcohol without additives or filtration.

The rum immediately irritated me heavily. I expected perfectly balanced ester notes, instead my first perception is herbs. The rum has a clear herbal note with fennel. In addition, a lot of spice with vanilla, roasted aromas, slightly candied fruit and a very medicinal note. There is also ester and some glue recognizable. The nose is also quite balanced. On the palate, this impression continues. First of all, the herbs are dominant again. With a rusty spiciness, some pepper and a distinctly woody influence. A little fruit and a nice dry profile the finish remains spicy, peppery and nice and dry.

What shall I say. I don't like this Fiji at all. I had great expectations, because the RA Fiji 2001 is still the best Fiji bottling so far for me. The current follow-up bottling is a long way from that. The Fiji profile is lost under a dominant herbal note and a high barrel influence. What happened here? Like the WP, BMMG and Venezuela, this is the fourth rum that stands out due to atypical herbal notes. For me, this was a misjudgement on the part of the bottler. And here it almost annoys me. All in all not a bad Rum but also not a good Fiji.

Diese Abfüllung von Rum Artesanal kommt aus der South Pacific Distillerie und wurde im legendären Jahrgang von 2001 im Pot Still hergestellt. Der Rum durfte ganze 22 Jahre reifen und wurde anschließend mit einer Fassstärke von 59,3% Alkohol ohne Zusatzstoffe oder Filtration als Single Cask in 225 50cl Flaschen abgefüllt.

Der Rum hat mich sofort schwer irritiert. Erwartet habe ich perfekt ausbalancierte Ester Noten, stattdessen ist meine erste Wahrnehmung Kräuter. Der Rum hat eine klare Kräuter Note mit Fenchel. Dazu viel Würze mit Vanille, Röstaromen, leicht kandierter Frucht und einer sehr medizinischen Note. Es ist auch Ester und etwas Klebstoff erkennbar. Die Nase ist auch recht ausgewogen. Am Gaumen geht dieser Eindruck weiter. Als erstes sind wieder die Kräuter dominant. Mit einer rostigen Würze, etwas Pfeffer und einem deutlich Holzeinfluss. Ein wenig Frucht und ein schönes trockenes Profil der Abgang bleibt würzig, pfeffrig und schön trocken.

Was soll ich sagen. Dieser Fiji gefällt mir überhaupt nicht. Ich habe eine große Erwartungshaltung gehabt, da der RA Fiji 2001 für mich immer noch die beste Fiji Abfüllung bisher ist. Die jetzige Folgeabfüllung ist davon weit weg. Das Fiji Profil geht unter einer dominanten Kräuter Note und einem hohen Fasseinfluss verloren. Was ist hier passiert? Wie schon der WP, BMMG und Venezuela ist dies der vierte Rum, welcher durch untypische Kräuter Noten auffällt. Für mich eine Fehleinschätzung vom Abfüller. Und hier ärgert es mich fast. Insgesamt kein schlechter Rum aber kein guter Fiji.
