I've only tried a couple of continental aged rums so far, and there is definitely a similarity between them, and a distinctive difference to tropical aged rum.
This is a bottling by online retailer Master of Malt, retailing at £45, of a single barrel from the Port Mourant still.
Smell is really distinctive. Light volatiles and something slightly musky and perhaps a little dirty. I haven't tried Caroni but perhaps there's something diesel like in thete akin to that.
Taste is all that with a slight funk and a biig burn. This is light and slightly oily but comes with a huge kick too. Subtle this is not. The flavour evolves into a really long finish that's extremely dry and a bit tannic.
It reminds me quite a bit of Cadenhead's blended rum, and also is the most whisky like rum I have tried. I put that down to the continental aging. Yet, at the same time, it's definitely rum in there, just a rather challenging rum, bottled a bit young, and really not like like El Dorado offerings at all. It lacks the depth of the demerera flavours and the caramel added to the barrels.
Instead, it's punchy and interesting, and the finish is super long.
Having heard about the wooden stills, and reluctant to puny £85 on an ED official bottling, I thought it would be an interesting alternative, and it is.
