This was commissioned by the author, Ben Aaronovitch, and given to independent bookshops. The bottle doesn't say much other than it was aged in a bourbon cask that previously held plum brandy. Considering that the distillery's only branded rum is only 18 months, my guess is that this is the same.
Smell is slivovic, that slightly sickly, slightly chemical smell that tells me it's plums in there. Perhaps a touch of burnt orange in there too.
Taste is a weird amalgam of the slivovic, a touch of cask, and some indefinable notes of something else.
My guess is that the molasses was column distilled, as there is nothing much coming through from the source spirit. It's surprisingly not rough, but the finish is all slivovic, almost vaguely heading into tequila territory.
It's not terrible. It's actually perfectly drinkable, but it doesn't taste at all like rum. It tastes like a mildly aged slivovic. Considering that Greensand Ridge charge £32 of 50cl of their standard rum offering, I would steer well clear, and buy yourself pretty much anything instead.
I appreciate the gift Dan, but this will be campfire only stuff for me.
