Feb. 2023

For my 400th rating, early spring 2021 and because it's time to open a new bottle of Caroni. Got the 1997 version, bottled in 2015 at 61.5% vol.
Shiny mahogany colored amber in the glass.
Not for the weak of nerve on the nose. Heavy, rich, dark notes like soaked dark colored wood, black berries with licorice filling, dark brown tobacco fermented for years in a coarse stitched leather pouch tanned with oak bark, caramel candies melting away on a freshly burned sugar cane field, moss freshly collected and dusted with cocoa powder. Your mouth will water.
On the palate delicate - elegant and wild - stormy. A whirlwind of flavors sweeps over the taste buds. Heavily toasted barrel staves dipped in caramel with a large portion of spiced and candied tropical fruits on top. It's accompanied by a crumb of tar from the leather pouch and a dash of Trinidad Spirit. You want another little sip.
The finish is where it really gets Caroni for the first time. Woody, tarry, and slightly diesel tasting flavors change to a salty sweetness towards the end. You enjoy the moment.
A great Caroni that differs significantly from the Velier or Rum Nation bottlings. Not as dirty as Velier's and not as woody as Rum Nation. For Caroni lovers, connoisseurs and explorers. 9+
Thanks Mr. Rumantic for the retype, moved now. Feb. 2023

The Bristol Classic Caroni 1997-2015 is a rum from the closed Caroni Distillery, which was at home in Trinidad. The rum was mainly used by the British Royal Navi. In 2002, Caroni was shut down and the legend was born. Some of the heavy rum was transported to Scotland by Bristol and they stored it in oak barrels. This Caroni from 1997 was bottled in 2015 in barrel strength with 61.5% alcohol as single cask. The Bristol bottle looks nice but the design and thin glass are not valuable enough to the content inside.

In the glass it becomes immediately clear that the rum is playing in its own league. Strong heavy notes are perceptible. Wonderfully intense come spicy notes with lots of tropical fruit. Burnt, roasted fruit. A lot of wood with dirty tar undertone. Some leather and tobacco. That nose is insane. Love it.

On the palate, the rum is intense. Dark fruity notes are immediately present. The alcohol transports a variety of aromas. He's surprisingly sweet at the beginning. Some banana, berries. Caramel. Oak with smoky toasted notes. Tobacco and seasoning. The rum is getting more and more spicy and dirty over time. The sweetness disappears. Leather comes with intense barrel notes and tar. I would just call it dirty. Long and intense, it remains on the palate. Light bitter substances are perceptible. The rum stays in the mouth for a long time and shows all its power. Just amazing. I love it.

The aftertaste in the mouth and in the empty glass are for me real highlights. I've never smelled on an empty glass for so long. I would call it a kind of pleasant ashtray aroma. But the big ones with sand 😉. I think the rum is worth every penny and the hype is justified. Spectacular and intense, the rum is unique. If you like it strong spicy and dirty, this is the place to be. Every rum lover should try a Caroni once.
