I’m a big fan of Montebello and I recently bought the 2022 edition of the 3, 6 and 8yo version.
The 6 yo can be found as vintage 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2015 and 2016. It seems like there will be new editions every year now. I don’t now if they differ very much. I’ve tasted the 2003 before, but it’s some years ago.
On the older ones the vintage year is written on the backside label, but on the two latest they instead has written the bottling year on the front label.
The one I review here is vintage 2016 (Edition 2022).
The nose is smoky and elegant with candied and ripe fruits together with aromas of olives, cherries, prunes and ginger.
On the palate it’s fruity, spicy and smoky with some thickness, saltiness and sweetness. Recognizable tastes is candied and ripe exotic fruits (pineapple, mango and papaya), fresh leather, licorice and currants.
During the long finish it remains very tasty and especially the currants and liquorice together with a dark, salty caramel stays for long.
Overall a very complex, balanced and elegant rum.
