Tonight’s Rum, Two Drifters Signature Rum, made in Devon UK! And they say it’s carbon negative! Big boasts… I picked this one up during the BC Liquor Stores Premium Spirit Sale (not a sale by the way).

Reported to be dry, made from imported molasses and coloured with caramelized sugar. We’ll see how the Rum is though, so here goes:

In the glass, this one year old Rum which was aged in French Oak and ex-Madeira casks is a bit on the light side. I assume from it’s age and non-charred barrels. The noise is bold and detectable at a distance. It’s everywhere. “Looking into it” I find the nose a bit sour, unRum-like. It’s raw and is molasses forward, maybe a bit of toffee in there with a bit of iron kicking up the rear. I find it hard to detect any fruit or complex notes.

The first hit comes off tart and dry, quickly highlighting the characteristics of an unbalanced Rum, it let’s you know it’s got heat. The second hit softens the dryness, but not the heat. Trying to dissect the flavours is a bit I get orange peel mostly with a brown sugar undertone. After a few more sips, I get some praline, The wood in this Rum is also dominant, thick even.
In the throat the Rum brings along some heat that grows significantly after you’ve finished tasting. It’s not overwhelming but some non-spirit drinkers wince. After numerous sips, it subsides because you get used to it. The finish is long and dry. Wood being the primary note.

I give this Rum a 6/10. Not my cup of tea as it were. Those who like British Rums such as Cadenhead, would likely like this Rum. Not a sipper by my books, and perhaps best served with fruit juice. Their website says serve with ice… Maybe I’ll try that. #363 of my 500 Rum goal.
