Velier 2007 Mount Gay Elliott Erwitt Magnum Series #1 14-Year

This Mount Gay Rum was launched by Velier as a limited special bottling. The pot-style molasses rum was allowed to be stored tropically in Barbados for 14 years. It was bottled at 60% cask strength. There are two versions of the single cask. 600 bottles a 70cl and another magnum version with 150cl which has even less bottles. Those bottles are certainly for collecting and flipping. The designation "Elliott Erwitt" refers to the artist who painted the pictures on the label. My sample is from a 150cl Magnum bottle, but the contents are identical to the 70cl version.

The nose shows a classic Mount Gay Pot Style Profile, which I've had in my glass quite a few times now. But the whole thing is beautifully fruity and with a light ester in the form of polish. I find orange peel, wood, spice with vanilla and a nice toffee sweetness. Unfortunately, the alcohol bites a bit and the whole thing looks sharp-edged. On the palate, the rum is very spicy with vanilla, leather, some pepper and roasted aromas. Lots of wood and dark chocolate. I find caramelized dried fruit. The whole thing is intense, but also with a certain sharpness. The finish is medium-long, dry, astringent with lots of wood and leather.

Actually a good solid rum with nice fruit on the nose. The whole thing could be a bit more balanced and the alcohol is a bit too present. Overall there are cheaper alternatives such as the Last Ward which is still on the market. There is a lot of hype here and hence the high price. So keep your hands off. 5cl are fully sufficient.

Dieser Mount Gay Rum wurde von Velier in einer limitierten Sonderabfüllung auf den Markt gebracht. Der im Pot Style hergestellte Melasse Rum durfte 14 Jahre tropisch auf Barbados lagern. Er wurde in einer Fassstärke von 60% abgefüllt. Von dem Single Cask gibt es zwei Versionen. 600 Flaschen a 70cl und noch eine Magnum Version mit 150cl. Abfüllungen, welche sicherlich nur zum Sammeln und Flippen sind. Die Bezeichnung "Elliott Erwitt" bezieht sich auf den Künstler, welcher die Bilder auf dem Etikett gemalt hat. Mein Sample ist von einer 150cl Magnum Flasche, der Inhalt ist aber indentisch zu der 70cl Version.

In der Nase zeigt sich ein klasisches Mount Gay Pot Style Profile, welches ich jetzt schon des öfteren im Glas hatte. Das ganze ist aber schön fruchtig und mit leichtem Ester in Form von Politur. Ich finde Orangenschale, Holz, Würze mit Vanille und eine schöne Toffee Süße. Leider beißt der Alkohol etwas und das ganze wirkt Scharfkantig. Am Gaumen ist der Rum sehr würzig mit Vanille, Leder, etwas Pfeffer und Röstaromen. Dazu viel Holz und dunkler Schokolade. Ich finde karamelisierte getrocknete Frucht. Da ganze ist intensiv, aber auch mit einer gewissen Schärfe. Der Abgang ist mittellang, trocken, astringend mit viel Holz und Leder.

Eigentlich ein guter solider Rum mit schöner Frucht in der Nase. Das ganze könnte etwas mehr Balance haben und der Alkohol ist etwas zu präsent. Insgesamt gibt es günstigere Alternativen, wie z.B. den Last Ward, welcher immer noch auf dem Markt ist. Hier ist viel Hype und daher auch der hohe Preis. Also eher Finger weg. 5cl sind da voll ausreichend.

Spectacular. The nose is a beautiful cacophony of honey, and flambeed bananas in a luscious creamy caramel coffee. Mixed tropical fruit basket, with dashes of the well balanced spices. Long long finish. The whole rum displays layers upon layers of complexity which gels perfectly together. The taste is phenomenal.

Extremely heavy and oily for Foursquare. Heavy pot still. Intense and super delicious
