A very different rum from Hampden

This is a high ester pot still rum from Hampden distillery in Jamaica tropically aged for 12 years in bourbon oak barrels. I am typically more of a Worthy Park fan and it took a while for me to find a Hampden bottling that I truly loved. I am curious with where this falls on my rum spectrum.
Taking a whiff this is interesting and different from the majority of what I have experienced from Hampden in the past. Here on the nose I get faint Yogurt Covered Raisins, Butterscotch, Mango, Pineapple, Custard Apple, and just the faintest hint of Sharpie. This is fascinating and different from most other aged Hampden Distillates I have had in that I detect no Banana here at all, like none. It’s definitely funky and the Yogurt Covered Raisins note is a first for me on any rum. When combined with the (banana-less) tropical fruits it makes for a very interesting experience.
Taking a sip I immediately get a blast of hot sweet, sour, and salty funk that permeates all of my senses. It takes a while to decipher each note but after a while I am able to parse it. First comes Chinese Sweet and Sour Sauce. That is followed by Apple Moonshine and Sea Salt. Next comes another rum “first”: Pomegranate Lavashak. My wife is Persian and they have this fruit leather that is not the sweet mess we have in Europe and America. Lavashak is sour, salty, and earthy. Here I get a very clear Pomegranate Lavashak note. It’s fascinating, and equaled only by the next note which is a hard to describe Umami note, the closest I can approximate to is Apple Chicken Sausage. That note is then followed by the faint note of used socks in the dirty laundry hamper. But it’s all very well done even if initially it comes across as a hot sweet and sour funky mess. If you had Lavashak, funky socks, and Apple Chicken sausage on your Bingo cards then kudos to you.
The finish is medium length but also brings a fairly different and unique experience. As this rum fades from the palate I am initially left with Menthol and Caramel. Slowly it changes to Pomegranate Lavashak with a faint raisin note. After a while I get moldy strawberry jam with Bananas Foster. Finally, a semblance of a Banana note - though accompanied by moldy Strawberry jam. Weird but actually not unpleasant…just interesting.
Overall this is a very different and quite complex rum. It is not specifically my cup of Jamaican funk tea, but it is still quite enjoyable. I guess where I stand is, I can really enjoy this sample and it’s complexities, but I don’t necessarily yearn for a full bottle of it in my collection. It is very good but not “rush out and buy a bottle now!” good.
