This particular bottling is WPL mark pot still rum tropically aged 11 Years in Bourbon Oak and selected by the esteemed Luca Gargano of Habitation Velier. Like all Habitation Velier bottlings, this rum contains no additives whatsoever. So does this rum meet the anticipation I have for it?

I can smell the nose on this rum from almost a foot away. It’s intense. Right away I get intense Banana Flambé and Strawberry Sauce nose rushing up at me from the Glencairn. Behind that comes a crazy assortment of notes like smelling an entire dinner from afar. Alongside the intense Banana Flambé and Strawberry Sauce notes I get Kalmata Olives, Grilled Venison, Grape Jelly, Black Cherry, Vanilla Bean. Then Rubber Eraser and faint Prosciutto notes. That is an intense and wild assortment of scent notes for an 11 Year aged spirit. The fruit notes stick out the most, but the savory notes play quite well. Thus far the hype is real.

Taking a sip the complexion changes. As intensely complex and fruity the nose is, the palate is another course entirely. Taking a sip at first I get a rush of that intense strawberry promised on the nose. Then the palate takes a serious savory turn. Immediately, the rum turns Dried Ancho Chili Peppers, Sage, and Intense Oak accompanied by the faint taste of Grilled Venison. Next comes Fine Scotch, Faint Banana, and Kalmata Olives. The entirely taste experience is overlaid by a rather intense Dried Chili Pepper spice. This rum drinks very, very hot, even with significant added water.

After the rum leaves my palate I am left with notes of Strawberry, Grape Jelly, Banana, Fine Scotch, and intense Oak like I just sucked on an oak popsicle stick with a fine dusting of chili powder.

The nose on this rum is every bit of the hype. However, the palate is a bit of a comparative let down. Yes it is complex and interesting, but it is a bit disjointed and doesn’t fit together near as well as I had hoped. In the grand scheme of rums, this one is pretty good, but compared to the 2005 bottling it’s a fairly big let down. The savory notes here leave a salty, oaky intensity that is just not my cup of tea. The overall impression is very savory…too savory in my impression. The beauty of the 2005 was its marriage of savory, fruity, and funky in perfect harmony. The 2009 bottling has some of those notes but it’s not near as synchronous and the oak aging on this bottling really overplays it’s hand. It’s a good rum in the grand scheme of things but I think Luca Gargano missed on this selection. (Even when he misses, it’s still very good; but when he hits its the nectar of the gods).

This has all the ingredients to be an amazing rum. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t come together well to reach those heights. That isn’t to say it’s not a good rum. It is a very good rum…just not as good as it could have been.
