This stands out from most aged Clement rums, and other aged Agricoles for that matter, in that it was aged for 4.5 years in *new* French Oak casks. At first I was a little worried that this might be too overly French Oaked. But let’s give this a shot anyway and see how it lines up.

On the nose I get Orange peel, specifically Mandarin Orange peel notes. That’s fascinating in itself. Alongside that I get the classic French oak note of Old Furniture. Then I get a clear “dried hay” note like stepping into a hay barn followed by green unripe Pineapple skin/husk.

The palate starts with Sharpie which is followed by cracked black pepper, green apple skins and Alfalfa hay. As I sip a strong delicious note of Toffee slowly builds and becomes strong.

On the finish I get dried lemon and the return of black pepper. After a while young Green Apple appears

In some respects this rum has all the classic hallmarks of an Agricole aged in French oak. My concerns about the rum being overly “French oaked” because of the casks being new French oak (as opposed to used French oak barrels) is thankfully misplaced.

On the other hand this rum has some unique characteristics not typically found in French oak aged Agricoles. For example the green apple and pineapple husk notes were unexpected. The toffee note balances the “fruit peel” notes quite nicely.

This rum is actually better than I anticipated. It’s like an improved version of Neisson Eleve Sous Bois to my tastes; like the replaced the sour notes of the Neisson ESB with light toffee notes instead. It works more nicely to my tastes.

This rum doesn’t blow me away or anything, but it is pretty decent for its category. I don’t mind sipping on this one bit.
