The nose gave off carmelized sugar, and tropical fruit aromas, with hints of ripe fruit.

The palate has is quite unique. It has a consistent and long body, especially for 118.

I was given a sampler for this to try.
The color is very clear and that may be because is aged for only four years.
Nose: Sugarcane, pineapple, very pleasant.
Taste: The first impression is that kicks hard, that's because is bottled at 59% ABV. After letting rest you can get more from it. Banana, coconut, sugarcane. The aftertaste is prolonged and pleasant.
Very good indeed will probably be better with some extra time in the barrel.
Will I buy it, not so sure the price is a bit stiff for me, and in that price range I can get some excellent rums.

Definitely not for the new-to-rum crowd.
This is a fresh experience, unlike that of typical aged rums. Nice pineapple notes with some spice that gives way to vegetal hints. Not off putting but a unique expression of aged rum from Africa. Perhaps could have benefited from more time in cask allowing some of these great flavors to meld and mellow.

It's hard for me to give this a rating - I think that it's a quality distillate from a rising star distillery, selected and bottled by Holmes Cay. I've really enjoyed some of Holmes Cay's other bottlings, and want to encourage them to continue looking for unusual stuff like this. I just don't like this one very much. There is a canned corn note that I get from other cane juice rums that is very prominent. I also wonder if the South African whiskey cask aging is lending notes that I don't care for. I've enjoyed other aged cane juice pot still rums, but this one is not for me. That said, this is a very unusual rum, and if you like pot still cane juice, this is worth seeking out for the novelty.
