Maybe I expected so much when I saw 30y solera, but anyway horrible taste for me.

(17. december 2021 i 1423)

Exotic fruit and vanilla aroma, vanilla and hazelnut in body, short afterburn.

Had just a sample of this column distilled blended rum from the Canary Islands at ABV 48%.
It’s so bland that it’s really hard to detect the tastes at all and not even the rather high ABV shines through, but I think I recognize that it’s fruity, a little nutty and that there are a weak taste of vanilla. Besides this it’s also of course sweet cause it’s Spanish.
Really nothing to write home about.

Amber in the glass.
Very faint on the nose. A little like fireworks burned a day ago and a caramel wrapping paper.
On the palate strong and nothing. Drinking spirit with a bit of caramel and wood.
In the finish just a burn and a singed oak leaf.
Maybe there really are friends of Spanish rum, I'm not one of them. For the brave and the toreros.

A bit minty Solera, pleasant enough but not my choice.

This is a frustrating rum. It has a quite good nose with very clearly identifiable notes of raisin, not bad at all. The very first taste is also good, nice and clear caramel, very good. Then the bad news, the strong alcohol burn completely erases any aftertaste and you are left feeling dropped off a really disappointing cliff after a promising start. This is a 30 year old by the solera system playbook (which is VERY different from a highly aged single barrel for instance) and it does have some good flavor potential, but the burn just torches any further development of flavor beyond the decent but far too quick first taste. A shame really.
