Bought this bottle for myself at K&L wine merchants in San Francisco, for which this brand is exclusively distributed. The distillate comes from Jamaica, is aged in Scotland for 19 years, before making its way to the Bay Area. Been waiting to try this for quite some time.
The nose is sweet, hints of banana (both overripe and veering towards rotten).
The initial sip is surprisingly mild for where this rum came from and its proof (59.3% ABV).
Mildness doesn't last long, the alcohol heat hits you next, a comforting wave of warmth, accompanied by the usual Hampden fare: overripe fruit and some other interesting flavors I can't pick out. Again, at this point, I'm still feeling like its not as "in your face" as I expected from this one.
As you begin to swallow this thing starts to really take over. It gets a bit bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. A hint of gasoline is there.
Finally, the finish and aftertaste is really where this one stands out: there's a strong taste of gasoline and other such fuels that linger around for a bit.
This is a high quality rum. I love it and I'm saving it for special occasions and to horrify friends of mine who know nothing of good ol' Jamaican funk.
