Excellence Rhum 1998 Caroni 23-Year

The Excellence Rhum Caroni 1998 is a rum from Trinidad from the closed Caroni Distillery. The column-style rum was allowed to be stored tropical and continental in oak barrels for 23 years and was bottled with a cask strength of 65.2% alcohol. The Single Cask bottling, limited to 225 bottles, was visually designed by Florent Lenzian.

In the nose it is immediately clear what kind of rum is in the glass. Strong but well balanced, the typical dirty tar notes come and combine with woody nutty barrel notes. Some sweetness and fruit also resonates. The nose is absolutely top.

On the palate, the 65.2% are very well integrated. Aromas are spread intensively in the mouth. The rum shows a great body. Complex come the Caroni typical tar and ashtray notes and combine with a fine fruit note, a hint of chocolate and some nut. The wood shapes the finish a little more and the earthy Caroni notes persist for a long time.

An absolutely great high quality rum with sadly a high price. For me, it is superior to the Kill Devil 1998 Caroni, as it is stronger but at the same time more balanced. Now I'm looking forward to the Bristol Classic Caroni 1998. If you are looking for a dirty Caroni, this is the right place for you.

Der Excellence Rhum Caroni 1998 ist ein Rum aus Trinidad von der geschlossenen Caroni Distillerie. Der im Column Stil hergestellte Rum durfte 23 Jahre tropisch und kontinental in Eichenfässern lagern und wurde mit einer Fassstärke von 65,1% Alkohol abgefüllt. Die auf 225 Flaschen limitierte Single Cask Abfüllung wurde optisch von  Florent Lenziani gestaltet.

In der Nase ist sofort klar, was für ein Rum im Glas ist. Kräftig aber gut ausbalanciert kommen die typischen dreckigen Teer Noten und verbinden sich mit holzig nussigen Fassnoten. Etwas Süße und Frucht schwingt auch mit. Die Nase ist absolut top.

Am Gaumen sind die 65,1% sehr gut eingebunden. Aromen werden intensiv im Mund verbreitet. Dabei zeigt der Rum einen tollen Körper. Komplex kommen die Caroni typischen Teer und Aschenbecher Noten und verbinden sich mit einer feinen Fruchtnote, einen Hauch Schokolade und etwas Nuss. Das Holz prägt den Abgang etwas mehr und die erdigen Caroni Noten bleiben lange bestehen.

Ein absolut toller hochwertiger Rum mit einem stolzen Preis. Für mich dem Kill Devil 1998 Caroni deutlich überlegen, da er kräftiger aber gleichzeitig auch ausgewogen ist. Jetzt bin ich auf den Bristol Classic Caroni 1998 gespannt. Wer einen dreckigen Caroni sucht ist hier richtig.
