Nose: Estery and somewhat funky gingerbread man. Banana on fire. Vanilla on fire. Freshly turned black soil.
Taste: Big, massive, huge! Yet so delicate, soft, fluffy and caramely yummy. Sweetness, and more sweetness. Yet not sickeningly so, this is juuust right.
Finish: Long finish. Still sweet. More banana and other assorted tropical fruits. Caramel. Light and mildly funky.
Nose is floral, delicate, fruity (raspberries and apricots) with licorice hiding in the back.
The palate begins like most Hampden rums with a sharp sour bite, but that quickly recedes into layers of sweet, salty, and funky. I get something different with every sip. After some time in the mouth there is some bitterness and dry oakiness that follows into the finish.
Finish is long, with the sweetness coming back and finally leaves me with a taste in my mouth that I can't quite describe. Maybe tarmac? Almost like a plastic water bottle left out in the sun, but not unpleasant.
Overall, a wonderful experience with many layers and nuances. I will be nursing this bottle for a while. However, I feel I cannot give this a 9 because for the price of $190 USD they could have given us a bit more proof.
~8.5/10
Wanted to dip my toes into a higher price band to see what we get for our hard earned cash, so bought a few samples. First up, Hampden 2010 LROK.
The nose is more restrained than I imagined. Subtle, very balanced funk, blended with a bit of varnish and wood. There's some lighter aromatics mixed in too, possibly a touch of mint. Smells like Hampden, only more rounded and subtle.
The taste is an evolving series of flavours. Initially very oaky, quite intense. Then there's an up swelling of enjoyable burn followed by funk and varnish, and then an incredibly long and evolving finish. I mean I can still taste this several minutes later!
Compared to the 8YO, it's smoother and much woodier, and the finish is incredibly long. The other Hampden flavours take more of a back seat. I like it, and am enjoying it. I imagine if I had a whole bottle, I'd get to know it better over time, and perhaps get to like it more, but on this evidence alone, it's good stuff though I prefer the 8YO
Someone below labeled it as 'decent but overpriced summer rum' which kinda fits as the rum quickly became rare, collectible and expensive.
Somewhat 'tamed' or 'normie' Jamaica but still 'composty', little sweet but way more sour. Boring and watered-down 48% ABV.
I've purchased 3 bottles and keeping 2 as an investment as this is truly nothing special on earth. Yet, the higher ABV/higher esther Hampden rums are IMHO fantastic and belong to the very pinnacle of current rummaking.

What is there not to like about the LROK? Nothing! This is a very addictive rum bottled at 47% ABV. The aroma is inviting and the first sip Had me sold. Not funky as many other Jamaican rums, simply superb! Nice long finish in the throat inviting you to another sip. Excellent rum! Now where am I going to find this?
