Foursquare 2006 Sassafras Velier 14-Year

What a wild ride. After sampling several classic Foursquare rums at the distillery I had the opportunity to enjoy a dram of this Velier release. If I was blindfolded I would not have known it was Foursquare. Only a few years in bourbon barrels balance time in Cognac barrels. Nice scent with very strong alcohol burn on the backside. But truly exceptional.

Nose: Umami galore nuanced by a balanced sweetness. Beautiful cinnamon rolls. Macadamia nuts, cacao nibs, sesame oil, and a touch of balsamic vinegar. A warm layer of spice comprising nutmeg, chopped raisins, bay leaf, blackberries, and burnt ginger. There's an earthiness to it, too, mixed with hints of light marker pen.

Palate: Velvety and spicy mouthfeel; the rich flavors gently roll around and alternate, still with that characteristic Foursquare softness. The pot still spirit character is noticaeble. Lightly salted peanuts, drops of Worcestershire sauce, Pandan leaves after cooking Pandan chicken, dusty Port wine, and cacao, masterfully held back by notes of bananas, toasted cherries, and citrus oil freshly expressed from an orange peel. Period hitns of tobacco. This checks all the boxes.

Finish: Still, that nuttiness but, this time, of almonds accompanied by molasses, cherry stalks, and old bubble gum. Very long.

Look, if i would like cognac that much i would be a member of cognac rating site. Besides that this rum is superb and once again Velier delivers a top quality product (complex, balanced). I also start to see why the high abv (casc strengths releases) make so much difference. I personally do not appreciate that much of cognac maturation. I still enjoy this rum very much. Therefore i rate this a weak 9.

Une palette aromatique très large..waouw...c'est certainement une des meilleures bouteilles que j'ai jamais eu le plaisir de boire.

This one is my the best rum every tasted. Powerfull but you wilk not feel it.

Takto jemný a silný FSQ pije človek len párkrát za život. Úžasný balance, výborná práca a výber Seala a hlavne Gargana. Tomuto rumu nič nechýba a človek má pocit,že pije oveľa slabší a sladký rum. Krásna práca
