Paul B is right. Itโ€™s neutral oak in an 8 year old rum was actually refreshing after my life at the higher price point end. At this price point I would consider adding to my standard as a middle of the road. It is quite good for what is and was a pleasant reset for my taste buds thus a 7. I have not tasted the whites so canโ€™t compare as of now.

We stopped by Cane & Table - I recommend visiting if you are in New Orleans. They have a large & eclectic selection of high-end rums; lots of French/Agricole style rums with some Jamaican rums as well.

This was my favorite of the night. Just a bit of Agricole in the background with some sweetness and complexity. I would probably buy a bottle of this if I find it.

I really liked the funky, Agricole flavours of this rhum. I drink a lot of different Clairins and Barbancourt, but this totally different. Have not been able to try the others as this is the only SK Zanj. It is made the fresh sugar cane, like Haitian rhums, but does have more of an earthy taste and a bit raw. It does age on the pallet to tastes of tobacco and burnt sugar. Loving a lot of rhum and rums with funk, I thought this was OK. It does need to breathe.

Pretty solid. I liked the white version (San Zanj). Still good to see some Haitian rums coming to the States. Like others already mentioned, it seems that aging time has somehow removed the drink's character.

Funny, not a big fan of whites, but the San Zanj was more enjoyable to me than the Ak Zanj. Nothing distinct straight. Was fine mixed.

Once a rum gets aged, it is usually better than the unaged white rum to start with. Not in this case. I actually prefer their unaged clairin mixed with agricole. Eight years of aging in ex-cognac barrels takes away that original character found on the unaged one.

After note: I was maybe a bit too rough in comparing this clairin to their unaged one, so here comes my mod to my original review. If one gets tired of too much oak barrel flavors from your other rums, then this one is the perfect solution to tone things down. It is a very difficult task to find an 8 year aged rum that does not absorb too much of the oak barrel flavors. For that, I have to hand it to this company, but not quite up to raising my rating by a point.

And if one drinks too much of this rhum, there will be no ill after effects the next day. Promised! However, this rhum is neither repulsive nor exciting to drink, so if all that you want to do is tie one on, then go for the totally tasteless Don Q Cristal at one third of this price.

I now have one review for each day of the year. Less than one third are worth buying again and another third I would not even try again if someone paid me to do so. This is very sad, so it looks like my search for great rums is over with and no more 200 mile drives to get more of the best ones.
