NR: Very balanced, fruity and delicious Hampden 10 out of 10
Today I have a very old C<>H Hampden bottled by The Rum Cask.
It was distilled in 1990 and bottled at 55.6%. It's already a legendary bottling, since the best high ester Hampdens are from 1990.
I must say, I don't need a heavy high ester punch, I prefer the more balance mark <>H.
The nose is very balanced and fruity. Yes, it's a high ester rum but without the hard punch.
It's very mild, no bite in the nose. Reminds me of my favorite Kill Devil 16y Hampden <>H.
I get the glue first, then pineapple, some bright notes of vanilla and melon.
There are also some grasy notes in the background. After that I get the mango, backed apples and salty notes of olives. I can also imagine some wood, for a 30y old rum it's almost not noticeable.
Perfect Hampden nose, fresh, fruity, concentrated and balanced. The best one I had so far.
Let's try this stuff. The initial taste is salty first (olives) I don't expected that. But then this rum explodes with very balanced fruity aromas and malt. I get the melon first, then it turrns into pineapple and I notice also some wood, my mouth get's dry, I get an impression of dust. This reminds me of Savanna HERR. Then I get some acid notes, but not overhelming, then it turns very sweet -> grilled pineapple and malt.
Holy Moly, this was only the initial taste.
In the middle I get again the grilled pineapple, malt, glue and as the sweetness intensifies again I get mango, then sunflower seeds, glue and again grilled pineapple at the end. The malt is always very tasty for me, it's very good that it appears in the early taste. It was so intensive that it turns into sunflower seed, I love that.
The finish is almost not spicy, I hold the rum some minutes in my mouth and enjoyed the flavours.
I would say it's middle long, I get the pineapple, then some vanilla and mango (like I'm eating a pudding with this flavours), then backed apple, pineapple and then malt that turns into sunflower seeds.
Very tasty end.
In the aftertaste I get pineapple, malt, mango and again some sunflower seeds.
This Hampden is very good, it's very balanced and gently.
I would rate it with 94 points.
