nose, port cask influence very present here (just 1 year after 3 years of ex bourbon barrels), sweet red berries on the nose you don t get that alcoholic burn even at 45% ABV ... aromas translates in the mouth, fruity, mostly red fruits and berries, some winey note, really pleasant and warming (45% ABV) again i m amazed how this rum aged only 4 years (also is column still distilled, not pot still), you feel like you drink older stuff, people at HSE really know their job ! this rum is very different from their basic VSOP, port barrels almost removed the agricole feeling from it, but i really like it ... it costed me 15,80 euro more than the basic VSOP but ok if you get something you like ...

This bottling from HSE (Habitation Saint Etienne) from Martinique is an Agricole VSOP, which means that the Rhum made from sugar cane juice, which was produced in the Creole Column Style, was allowed to mature tropically in ex-Bourbon casks for 4 years. In addition, this VSOP was aged in port wine barrels for about two months. The Rhum was bottled at 45% alcohol. Since it is an Agricole, of course, without additives.

The nose is just gorgeous. I love the HSE nose. It has these strong, slightly musty hay notes. Less citrus than many other Agricoles. I can clearly smell those notes here. In addition, typical notes of wood, vanilla and caramel. But then also a lot of fruit. Red fruits. The port wine is there. It's all nicely balanced. The rum is nicely present on the palate. The alcohol announces itself and the 45% is already pleasantly warming. Hay, old wood, red fruits, currant, caramel and lots of wood influence. The whole thing is a little sweeter without being really sweet. The whole thing becomes drier towards the end, Agricole and the Port barrel combine beautifully and Tannins become more present.

A very successful Rhum Agricole. The VSOP has been perfectly expanded and upgraded. The port influence is natural and not superimposed, but complemented. The Rhum seems much older than 4 years and the tropical aging has done a good job. A good entry into the world of Agricole and easy sippers at a good, fair price.

Bought this bottle for over a year ago from Catawiki. Rhum HSE is produced at the Le Simon distillery in Martinique. It’s
distilled in a Creole column and then aged for more than 3 years in American oak barrels whereafter it’s aged for more than 8 months in casks previously used for Port wine.
The aromas is fruity, spicy, sweet and woody with some notes of prunes and nuts.
In mouth and on the palate I recognize prunes, oak, dried fruits and spices. The balance between sweetness and dryness is perfect and it’s here it becomes clear it’s an AOC Rhum.
The finish is quite long, dry, sweet, fruity and spicy.
Overall one of the best port cask finished rums I’ve tasted.
